Elastic Interaction Between a Mesoscale Eddy-Pair and an Axisymmetrical Eddy

V. Zoeller et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the elastic interaction between an eddy-pair and an axisymmetrical eddy in inviscid isochoric 2D flows and quasi-geostrophic 3D flows. The results show that interactions with almost no vorticity exchange or vorticity loss to the background field are possible, but changes in displacement velocity occur. The interaction is sensitive to initial conditions, and inelastic interactions may occur depending on the initial position of the eddy-pair and small changes in the vorticity distribution of the axisymmetrical eddy.

Submesoscale Coherent Vortices in the South Atlantic Ocean: A Pathway for Energy Dissipation

C. Z. Lazaneo et al.

Summary: Mesoscale eddies in the South Atlantic propagate westward and interact with the Vitoria-Trindade Ridge, leading to the formation of submesoscale coherent vortices (SCVs). The dynamics of two adjacent SCVs wandering through the ridge are described using high-resolution measurements. It is found that the anticyclonic SCVs exhibit low potential vorticity and angular momentum, and are prone to small-scale turbulence and energy dissipation.

Dipole dynamics in the point vortex model

Karl Lydon et al.

Summary: Understanding vortex interactions is crucial for understanding turbulence. In this study, the dynamics of point vortex dipoles interacting with vortex structures were investigated using an idealized point vortex model. The results shed light on dipole size evolution, stability properties of vortex clusters, and the role of dipole-cluster interactions in turbulent mixing in 2D quantum turbulence.

Robust and unstable axisymmetric vortices, including neutral vortices, of a new two-dimensional vortex family

A. Viudez

Summary: The paragraph discusses the solutions of robust axisymmetric neutral vortices with zero vorticity in two-dimensional Euler flows with distributed vorticity. Some linear combinations of vorticity layer-modes have vanishing net vorticity and remain steady, while others give rise to unstable neutral vortices. The robustness of these neutral vortices is related to spiralization and axisymmetrization of the vorticity disturbances as advected by a convex azimuthal velocity distribution.
