Accelerated Short Circuiting in Anode-Free Solid-State Batteries Driven by Local Lithium Depletion

John A. Lewis et al.

Summary: Anode-free solid-state batteries demonstrate high energy density, and commercially relevant quantities of lithium can be plated reliably at moderate current densities using a sulfide solid-state electrolyte. The cycling stability of these batteries is limited by the nonuniform presence of lithium during stripping, leading to high local current densities and void formation. However, thicker lithium at the interface can improve resistance to short circuiting.

How Does the Creep Stress Regulate Void Formation at the Lithium-Solid Electrolyte Interface during Stripping?

Hanghang Yan et al.

Summary: Research has shown that in the presence of interfacial defects at the Li/solid electrolyte interface, the creep-induced flux enhancement of vacancies is the primary mechanism that impedes void formation. In contrast to simulations on an ideal flat Li/solid electrolyte interface, interfaces with defects have a greater impact on void formation.

The void formation behaviors in working solid-state Li metal batteries

Yang Lu et al.

Summary: This study uncovers the principles of interfacial void evolution in solid-state batteries and establishes a model for void nucleation and growth. Through electrochemical calculations and in situ observations, the microscopic features of void defects under different stripping conditions are studied, and the quantification of void-induced contact loss processes is conducted. The electrochemical-morphological relationship helps to understand and design solid-solid interfaces for advanced solid-state batteries.

Void growth within Li electrodes in solid electrolyte cells

J. A. B. Agier et al.

Summary: The growth of voids at the electrode/electrolyte interface in solid-state Li batteries is analyzed using a framework that incorporates power-law creep deformation of the Li electrode and Li+ flux through a single-ion conductor solid electrolyte. The results suggest that void growth is influenced by the interfacial resistance, electrolyte conductivity, and the presence of dislocations within the electrode. The findings provide insights into the failure mechanisms of Li batteries due to void growth.

A phase field electro-chemo-mechanical formulation for predicting void evolution at the Li-electrolyte interface in all-solid-state batteries

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: A mechanistic theory for predicting void evolution in all-solid-state battery cells is presented. The theory incorporates phase field formulation, viscoplastic description of Li deformation, mass transfer formulation and interaction between the electrode and the solid electrolyte to resolve the coupled electro-chemical mechanical problem. Numerical implementation and case studies show that the model can capture the main experimental observations.

Analyzing void formation and rewetting of thin in situ-formed Li anodes on LLZO

Kiwoong Lee et al.

Summary: The stripping behavior of thin Li electrodes on solid electrolytes is investigated, showing that the accessible discharge capacity increases with lower current density and thicker Li anode. Two different mechanisms are identified for the stripping of thin Li electrodes depending on the current density. It is also demonstrated that the de-wetted Li/LLZO interfaces can be reestablished by thermal treatment.

The initiation of void growth during stripping of Li electrodes in solid electrolyte cells

Siamak S. Shishvan et al.

Summary: The study reveals the importance of considering power-law creep and dislocation motion in predicting void growth in the Li electrode. The modified Butler-Volmer kinetics for the interface flux associated with creep deformation of the Li electrode in a single-ion conductor solid electrolyte is key in understanding the process.

An assessment of a mechanism for void growth in Li anodes

U. Roy et al.

Summary: The growth of voids in the solid-state electrolyte of a Lithium (Li) ion battery is influenced by the presence of pre-existing imperfections, with larger imperfections of over 1200 μm being necessary for void initiation. Experimental observations, however, suggest that voids as small as 1 μm can initiate, highlighting a discrepancy with the current model that involves power-law creep of the Li anode combined with Butler-Volmer kinetics.
