A neural network-based approach for bending analysis of strain gradient nanoplates

C. A. Yan et al.

Summary: The paper presents a new machine learning technique for studying thin nanoplates at the nanoscopic level. The technique combines the second-order strain gradient theory and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to solve partial differential equations and determine the length scale parameter of the nanoplate model. The results demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of this machine learning framework for solving high-order PDEs and its stability and reliability through parameter studies.

Machine learning assisted prediction of mechanical properties of graphene/aluminium nanocomposite based on molecular dynamics simulation

Jian Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper combines molecular dynamic simulation and machine learning techniques to predict the mechanical properties of graphene reinforced aluminium nanocomposites and modify the Halpin-Tsai model. The study considers the effects of graphene's volume fraction, alignment angle, chirality, and environment temperature on the properties. Machine learning models are developed and optimized using the simulation data to estimate the Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength. The modified Halpin-Tsai model provides significantly improved accuracy for determining the Young's modulus of graphene-reinforced aluminium nanocomposite structures.

A machine learning framework for predicting the shear strength of carbon nanotube-polymer interfaces based on molecular dynamics simulation data

Aowabin Rahman et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced composites have great potential in aerospace applications due to their high strength and stiffness, but limited load transfer capability between CNTs presents a challenge. In this study, a machine learning model trained with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is proposed to predict CNT pullout force, with a data augmentation method used to maximize training data utilization.

A variational approach of homogenization of heterogeneous materials towards second gradient continua

J. F. Ganghoffer et al.

Summary: A methodology is proposed for constructing effective strain gradient media for heterogeneous materials, combining linear elasticity variational principle and extended Hill lemma. The method decomposes the microscopic displacement field of the heterogeneous continuum into a polynomial homogeneous part in the generalized kinematic measures of the strain gradient effective continuum and a periodic fluctuation, and computes strain gradient effective moduli for composite materials.

Thermodynamics of fractional-order nonlocal continua and its application to the thermoelastic response of beams

Sai Sidhardh et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive framework for constitutive modeling of nonlocal thermoelasticity in solids using a fractional-order approach, showing that the fractional-order model allows for the rigorous application of localized thermodynamic balance principles. Additionally, the mechanical governing equations for fractional-order solids involve self-adjoint operators and have unique solutions.

Fractional-order structural stability: Formulation and application to the critical load of nonlocal slender structures

Sai Sidhardh et al.

Summary: This study introduces a framework for stability analysis of nonlocal solids described by fractional-order continuum theory, establishing Lagrange-Dirichlet stability criteria through energy-based approach using geometrically nonlinear fractional-order kinematic relations. The study also derives the Rayleigh-Ritz coefficient for critical load and determines critical loads for buckling of nonlocal beams and plates using fractional-order finite element solver. Results show the influence of nonlocal interactions on both material and geometric stiffness, supported quantitatively through case studies and comparison with classical nonlocal approaches.

Mesoscopic and multiscale modelling in materials

Jacob Fish et al.

Summary: Multiscale modelling is a powerful tool for simulating materials behavior across different length and time scales. It aims to simulate continuum-scale behavior using information from computational models of finer scales, rather than relying on empirical constitutive models. Various methods have been developed to bridge multiple length and time scales, including techniques integrating new fields such as machine learning and material design.
