Coupled Potential Energy Surfaces Strongly Impact the Lowest-Energy Spin-Flip Transition in Six-Coordinate Nickel(II) Complexes

Nathan R. East et al.

Summary: Luminescent complexes of earth-abundant first-row transition metals are of interest due to their properties and applications. Six-coordinate 3d(3) chromium-(III) complexes show luminescence, while pseudoctahedral 3d(8) nickel-(II) complexes do not.

Cobalt(III) Carbene Complex with an Electronic Excited-State Structure Similar to Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Compounds

Narayan Sinha et al.

Summary: Unlike platinum group metals, cobalt(III) complexes with mixed metal-to-ligand and intra-ligand charge transfer properties in the excited state have not been discovered yet. A stable cobalt(III) complex with substantial mixed metal-to-ligand and intra-ligand charge transfer character in the excited state was obtained by using a rigid tridentate chelate ligand.

Yellow-Emitting, Pseudo-Octahedral Zinc Complexes of Benzannulated N∧N∧O Pincer-Type Ligands

Issiah B. Lozada et al.

Summary: This study presents a series of unique Zn(II) complexes with a pseudo-octahedral structure. By incorporating phenanthridine units into the ligands, these complexes exhibit extended luminescence lifetimes in the solid state. The research also indicates the role of aggregation in enhancing emission in solid state.

Spin-flip luminescence

Winald Robert Kitzmann et al.

Summary: In this review, the difference between charge-transfer emission and metal-centered transitions in molecular photochemistry is addressed. The focus is on spin-flip emitters, particularly the strongly phosphorescent Cr-III complexes, which have unique properties and different design strategies compared to traditional charge-transfer phosphors. The prerequisites for efficient spin-flip emission are outlined, and the recent progress, challenges, and potential research opportunities in tuning the energies of emissive excited states for spin-flip emitters are discussed.

Reduction of Electron Repulsion in Highly Covalent Fe-Amido Complexes Counteracts the Impact of a Weak Ligand Field on Excited-State Ordering

Christopher B. Larsen et al.

Summary: Accessing panchromatic absorption and long-lived charge-transfer (CT) excited states is crucial for developing abundant-metal molecular photosensitizers. This study presents an aerobically stable Fe(II) complex with panchromatic absorption and a 3 ns excited-state lifetime, demonstrating the importance of metal-ligand covalency in elongating excited state lifetimes. The findings highlight a novel design principle for extending excited state lifetimes in abundant metal photosensitizers.

A Near-Infrared-II Emissive Chromium(III) Complex

Narayan Sinha et al.

Summary: By combining pi-donating amido with pi-accepting pyridine coordination units in a tridentate chelate ligand, a strong nephelauxetic effect was achieved in a homoleptic Cr-III complex, shifting its luminescence to the NIR-II spectral range. This study focuses on increasing metal-ligand bond covalence to shift the ruby-like E-2 emission of Cr-III to 1067 nm at 77 K, taking a fundamentally different approach from previous ligand design strategies.

Pseudo-octahedral nickel(ii) complexes of strongly absorbing benzannulated pincer-type amido ligands: ligand-based redox and non-Aufbau electronic behaviour

Jason D. Braun et al.

Summary: The synthesis, structures, and electronic characterization of three strongly colored pseudo-octahedral Ni(ii) complexes supported by redox-active diarylamido ligands with benzannulated N-heterocyclic donor arms are reported. These S = 1 paramagnets each present two metal-based singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) identified by density functional theory (DFT) and show consistent solid-state and solution magnetism measurements. Under oxidative potentials, intense and well-defined absorption features extending into the near IR (NIR) are observed, attributed to the appearance of aminyl radical character through ligand-based redox and exceptionally strong intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transitions across a Ni(ii) bridge.
