From Au11 to Au13: Tailored Synthesis of Superatomic Di-NHC/PPh3-Stabilized Molecular Gold Nanoclusters

Matteo Bevilacqua et al.

Summary: We report a new method for synthesizing phosphine (PR3) and di-N-heterocyclic carbene (di-NHC) ligand stabilized molecular gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The reaction of di-NHC gold(I) complexes with [Au11(PPh3)8Cl2]Cl clusters results in the formation of three new classes of AuNCs through a controllable reaction sequence. The electronic and steric properties of the di-NHC ligand affect the product distribution, leading to the isolation and characterization of different clusters. One of the characterized clusters shows strong emission in solution.

Insight Into the Stability and Electronic and Optical Properties of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Analogues of Halogen/Phosphine-Protected Au13 Superatomic Clusters

Jianyu Wei et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of incorporating N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) as part of the protecting-ligand shell in gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The results show that the substitution of phosphine ligands with NHCs in experimentally characterized AuNCs demonstrates similar electronic structure and stability, but slightly different optical properties. These findings support the obtainment of novel targets for explorative synthesis efforts featuring NHC ligands on medium-sized species based on the recurrent Au-13 icosahedral core.

NHC-Stabilized Au10 Nanoclusters and Their Conversion to Au25 Nanoclusters

Paul A. Lummis et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a toroidal Au-10 cluster stabilized by N-heterocyclic carbene and halide ligands is described via reduction of NHC-Au-X complexes (X = Cl, Br, I). The halide ligands significantly affect the formation, stability, and conversions of these clusters. The bromide derivative readily converts to a biicosahedral Au-25 cluster at room temperature, while the iodide derivative shows significant formation of Au-25 upon reduction of NHC-Au-I. The isolated bromide derivative of Au-25 cluster exhibits relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield due to the high rigidity enforced by multiple CH-pi interactions.

Solid-State Isolation of Cyclic Alkyl(Amino) Carbene (cAAC)-Supported Structurally Diverse Alkali Metal-Phosphinidenides

Aditya Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene (cAAC)-supported, structurally diverse alkali metal-phosphinidenides have been synthesized and characterized through NMR studies and X-ray diffraction. The mechanism of electron transfer process was supported by cyclic voltammetry studies and Density Functional Theory calculations. The solid state oligomerization process was found to be largely dependent on the ionic radii of alkali metal ions, steric bulk of cAAC ligands, and solvation/de-solvation/recombination of the dimeric unit.
