Humidity's Role in Heat-Related Health Outcomes: A Heated Debate

Jane W. Baldwin et al.

Summary: As climate change leads to increased temperature and humidity, there are concerns about the potential impacts on human health. While it is believed that higher humidity can worsen heat stress, epidemiological studies have not consistently found associations between humidity and heat-related health outcomes. This uncertainty hinders our ability to effectively address present and future heat challenges.

A century of exercise physiology: key concepts on coupling respiratory oxygen flow to muscle energy demand during exercise

Guido Ferretti et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the coupling conditions between respiration and metabolism, revealing that adjustment of oxygen supply and demand can be achieved through appropriate combinations of respiratory variables during steady-state rest and exercise. During exercise, the coupling of respiration to metabolism is preserved when the respiratory system responds faster than the metabolic pathways. However, at high exercise intensities, the coupling is transiently broken and blood lactate accumulation occurs. In breath-holding, no coupling is possible between respiration and metabolism.

Human body radiation area factors for diverse adult population

Konrad Rykaczewski et al.

Summary: Radiation plays a significant role in heat exchange for human body and environment, impacting thermal comfort and safety. This study developed computational manikin models to analyze the impact of radiation, finding that significant relative differences only occur in manikins with BMI above 80th percentile. However, these differences are minimal compared to variations induced by factors like the zenith angle increase.

Summary: This article introduces the basics of mammalian body temperature regulation, including definitions, evolution, examples of body temperature variability, and unique examples of hibernation and torpor. The article also suggests an alternative paradigm for warm-blooded animals and explains how a better understanding of body temperature regulation benefits individuals in personal and professional lives.

Correlation of neurological level and sweating level of injury in persons with spinal cord injury

Michelle Trbovich et al.

Summary: Thermoregulatory dysfunction post-SCI can lead to heat-related illnesses, with no current objective method to predict those at highest risk. This study found that individuals with complete tetraplegia lack sweating capacity during passive heat stress, while those with paraplegia sweat an average of one dermatomal level below their neurological level of injury.

The scaling of human basal and resting metabolic rates

Heather M. Bowes et al.

Summary: The study found that basal and resting metabolic rates in humans scale allometrically with body mass, with an exponent of 0.50-0.55. It was also demonstrated that ratiometric scaling yielded invalid metabolic predictions, even within the relatively narrow experimental mass range. These findings have significant physiological implications for exercise, modeling, nutrition, and metabolism-dependent pharmacological prescriptions.

The origin of endothermy in synapsids and archosaurs and arms races in the Triassic

Michael J. Benton

Summary: Birds and mammals are successful in modern ecosystems due to their endothermy. The stepwise emergence of endothermy began in the Late Permian but accelerated in the Early Triassic, triggered by the Permian-Triassic mass extinction. In the Triassic, an arms race between synapsids and archosauromorphs led to the initial dominance of dinosaurs and pterosaurs.

The anaerobic threshold: 50+years of controversy

David C. Poole et al.

Summary: The anaerobic threshold (AT) is a controversial concept in exercise physiology and medicine, originally thought to be caused by muscle anoxia but now understood to be a response to increased glycolytic flux. Lactate is now appreciated as an important energy source and signaling molecule, with non-invasive estimation of LT using the gas exchange threshold remaining important in exercise training and in the clinic.

Evaluation of the convective heat transfer coefficient of human body and its effect on the human thermoregulation predictions

Jingxian Xu et al.

Summary: Human thermoregulation models, especially the Fiala model, are widely accepted for predicting thermoregulatory responses and assessing thermal comfort. However, the convective heat transfer coefficients used in these models were outdated and lacked differentiation between body postures. This study evaluated the impact of improved heat transfer coefficients on the Fiala model accuracy, showing that different body postures can affect the predicted skin temperature.

Summary: The experiment showed that oxygen consumption of healthy humans scales allometrically with body mass across the entire metabolic range, with the scaling exponent significantly increasing from rest to maximal exercise. Only two scaling exponents (rest and exercise) were needed to produce mass-independent outcomes, hence ratiometric and linear regression analyses are not recommended as scaling methods.
