Spatial distribution of the relationship between nitrate residues in soil and surface water quality revealed through attenuation factors

K. D'Haene et al.

Summary: Intense efforts have been made to reduce nutrient losses and decrease nitrate concentrations in European surface waters, but these reductions have leveled off in recent years. Local nitrogen mitigation measures are needed to further improve surface water quality. The use of NO3--N residue as an indicator of agricultural nitrogen pressure may not fully capture the vulnerability of streams to nitrate inputs, as attenuation factors for surface water play a crucial role in reducing nitrate concentrations. Optimization of nitrogen fertilization rates and promoting catch crops are effective measures, but may have limited additional effects in regions where they are already widely practiced. In regions with low attenuation factors, end-of-pipe technologies may be necessary to achieve acceptable nitrate concentrations in surface water.

Calibration of the EU-Rotate_N model with measured C and N mineralization from potential fertilizers and evaluation of its prediction of crop and soil data from a vegetable field trial

Ingunn Ovsthus et al.

Summary: In this study, the EU-Rotate_N model was calibrated for C and N mineralization from various organic resources and evaluated for predicting soil and crop data in field trials. The model showed successful calibration for industrial materials, while facing challenges with seaweeds, anaerobically digested food waste, and sheep manure. Overall, the model can be used as a valuable tool for decision support when using organic materials as N fertilizer, in combination with other models and literature information.
