A global meta-analysis of soil organic carbon in the Anthropocene

Damien Beillouin et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities have profound impacts on soil organic carbon (SOC) and its contribution to ecosystem services. This review synthesizes the impacts of land-use change, land management, and climate change on SOC using meta-analyses. The results suggest that land conversion for crop production leads to SOC loss, which can be partially restored through land management practices. Forest land management practices generally result in SOC depletion. Indirect effects of climate change, such as wildfires, have a greater impact on SOC than direct climate change effects.

Mapping of crop types and crop sequences with combined time series of Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data for Germany

Lukas Blickensdoerfer et al.

Summary: Monitoring agricultural systems is becoming increasingly important due to global challenges. In this study, we proposed a workflow to generate national agricultural land cover maps on a yearly basis by accounting for varying environmental conditions. Our results showed high overall accuracy and plausible class accuracies for different crop types across years, despite meteorological variability and the presence of drought. The combined use of optical, SAR, and environmental data improved overall accuracies compared to single sensor approaches. The maps demonstrated high spatial consistency and good delineation of field parcels, aligning well with agricultural statistics.

Smaller farm size and ruminant animals are associated with increased supply of non-provisioning ecosystem services

Johan O. Karlsson et al.

Summary: To balance the negative environmental impacts and positive contributions of livestock, it is important to understand how ecosystem services vary across farms. A study in Sweden found that small-scale and ruminant farms had more varied landscapes, semi-natural grasslands, and better crop sequences compared to crop-specialized farms. On the other hand, farms specializing in monogastric livestock had less varied landscapes and inferior crop sequences.

Field-level land-use data reveal heterogeneous crop sequences with distinct regional differences in Germany

Clemens Janicke et al.

Summary: Crop cultivation intensifies globally, which can jeopardize biodiversity and the resilience of cropping systems. We investigate the changes in crop rotations in half of the croplands in Germany from 2005 to 2018. The results reveal a high diversity of crop sequences in Germany, with larger farms having more diverse crop sequences and organic farms having lower shares of cereal crops. In some federal states, crop rotations became less structurally diverse over time, while in one state, structural diversity increased. The functional diversity of crop sequences remained largely stable. Overall, quantifying the dynamics of crop sequences at the field level is an important metric of land-use intensity and can reveal the patterns of land-use intensification.

Global systematic review with meta-analysis reveals yield advantage of legume-based rotations and its drivers

Jie Zhao et al.

Summary: Legume pre-crops in crop rotations can increase average crop yield by 20% across various crops and climatic regions, with greater benefits observed in low-input and low-diversity agricultural systems. The yield advantages decline with increasing nitrogen fertilizer rates and crop diversity. This study highlights the critical pathway offered by legume-based rotations for enhancing global crop production.

Temporal and Spatial Positioning of Service Crops in Cereals Affects Yield and Weed Control

Elsa Lagerquist et al.

Summary: Leguminous service crops can reduce reliance on external resources in cropping systems. Intercropping these crops in two consecutive crops can extend their growth period and improve yield. However, their growth and service provision are influenced by weather conditions and require adaptation to local conditions.

Integrated policy analysis to identify transformation paths to more-sustainable legume-based food and feed value-chains in Europe

Balint Balazs et al.

Summary: The food- and feed-value systems in the European Union lack self-sufficiency in high-protein legume grain production due to multiple barriers. Recognizing and promoting legumes as cornerstone species for more sustainable agri-food systems is deemed necessary and logical. By integrating key pathways and enablers, the sustainable transformation of legume production and consumption in Europe can be promoted.

Long-term effects of crop rotation, tillage, and fertilizer nitrogen on soil health indicators and crop productivity in a temperate climate

I Chahal et al.

Summary: The study found that diversifying crop rotations can improve soil health indicators and crop productivity, such as increasing soil organic carbon and total nitrogen storage through the introduction of cover crops, perennials, and small grain cereals. No-tillage practices may increase soil microbial activity under certain conditions. Commercial soil health tests can effectively detect the impact of different management practices on soil health.

Designing farmer-acceptable rotations that assure ecosystem service provision in the face of climate change

David A. Bohan et al.

Summary: Approaches to landscape modification should involve farmers and account for climate change for landscapes to be designed for future environmental conditions. Farmers may need to modify crops to adapt to future climatic conditions, based on their knowledge, in order to maintain agricultural productivity and resilience in the face of climate change.

Global option space for organic agriculture is delimited by nitrogen availability

Pietro Barbieri et al.

Summary: Organic agriculture is seen as a strategy to reduce environmental impacts and achieve global climate and biodiversity goals, but studies show that organic farming may not be able to fully meet global food demand due to nitrogen limitations. However, by redesigning the livestock sector and reducing per capita caloric intake, public policies could support a transition to organic agriculture on a significant portion of the global agricultural area, despite current nitrogen constraints.
