Auditory Hallucinations and Self-Injurious Behavior in General Population Adolescents: Modeling Within-Person Effects in the Tokyo Teen Cohort

Daniel Stanyon et al.

Summary: This study found a complex bidirectional relationship between auditory hallucinations and self-injurious behavior among adolescents, independent of depressive symptoms. Auditory hallucinations may serve as both a predictor for later self-injurious behavior and a manifestation of psychological distress induced by self-injury.

Future Directions in Understanding and Interpreting Discrepant Reports of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors Among Youth

Angela Page Spears et al.

Summary: The quality and usefulness of youth suicide research depend on how we assess suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). With access to a variety of STB assessments for youth, it is important to interpret the results meaningfully, especially when different assessments yield conflicting information. Managing discrepant reports of STBs is crucial for comprehensive assessment, which can contribute to understanding the causes, improving clinical decision-making, intervention development, and prognosis tracking.

Age at onset of mental disorders worldwide: large-scale meta-analysis of 192 epidemiological studies

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of promoting good mental health, prevention, and early intervention before the onset of mental disorders. It found that different types of mental disorders have different age at onset characteristics, providing valuable guidance for the timing of interventions for specific mental disorders.

Psychotic-like experiences of young adults in the general population predict mental disorders

Maija Lindgren et al.

Summary: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are risk markers for psychotic disorders and may indicate susceptibility to mental disorders. This study found that PLEs reported in young adulthood can predict subsequent psychotic and mental disorders in the general population. Furthermore, PLEs are a predictive marker of overall psychopathology independent from general psychological distress.

Prevalence and Correlates of Suicide and Nonsuicidal Self-injury in Children A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Richard T. Liu et al.

Summary: Considerably less is known about self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) in preadolescence than older age groups, but the prevalence of preadolescent suicide has increased in recent years. This study aims to assess the prevalence and correlates of preadolescent SITBs, as well as compare them with adolescent SITBs in terms of associated characteristics.

A Deeper Dive Into the Relation Between Psychotic-like Experiences and Suicidal Ideation and Behaviors in Children Across the United States

Samantha Y. Jay et al.

Summary: The study found that children endorsing psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are at a greater risk for suicidal ideation and behavior (SI/SB), and distress specific to PLEs may play an important role as a mediator and moderator in this relationship.

Externalizing the threat from within: A new direction for researching associations between suicide and psychotic experiences

Jamie Murphy et al.

Summary: The study found a bidirectional relationship between self-injurious/suicidal behavior (SIB) and psychotic experiences (PEs), suggesting that SIB could be considered as a plausible antecedent for PEs. In some cases, PEs were explicitly characterized by content related to SIB/threat/death.

Three types of psychotic-like experiences in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis

Henry R. Cowan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the validity of persecutory ideation, bizarre experiences, and perceptual abnormalities in a clinical high-risk youth sample. Self-reported PLEs can be used not only for screening individuals for inclusion in the CHR classification, but also to predict progression to psychotic illness in CHR individuals.

Mediators of the association between psychotic experiences and future non-suicidal self-injury and suicide attempts: results from a three-wave, prospective adolescent cohort study

Emily Hielscher et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between psychotic experiences (PEs) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempts across three waves of data, finding that auditory hallucinatory experiences (HEs) were indirectly associated with future NSSI and suicide attempts via recent traumatic life events, high psychological distress, and low self-esteem. Other PE subtypes were generally not associated with incident NSSI/suicide attempts at 1- and 2-year follow-up. These findings highlight the importance of screening for auditory HEs when assessing a young person's self-harm/suicide risk.

Changes of psychotic-like experiences and their association with anxiety/depression among young adolescents before COVID-19 and after the lockdown in China

Zhipeng Wu et al.

Summary: The study identified a significant increase in adolescent PLEs after lockdown, with a positive correlation between changes in PLEs and changes in anxiety/depression. Four PLEs trajectories were identified based on reports at two timepoints, and the group with new-onset PLEs experienced the most severe exacerbation in anxiety/depression symptoms.

Gender differences in the experience of psychotic-like experiences and their associated factors: A study of adolescents from the general population

Alexandra Stainton et al.

Summary: Research in adolescents found significant gender differences in experiencing PLEs, with females reporting higher levels of PLEs but similar associations with stress, anxiety, and depression as males. However, males showed a stronger association between daily hassles and PLEs compared to females. Therefore, interventions targeting daily life stress may need to consider the emotional perception of stress in females and everyday life hassles in males.

Can't get you out of my head: Persistence and remission of psychotic experiences in adolescents and its association with self-injury and suicide attempts

Emily Hielscher et al.

Summary: Persisting psychotic experiences (PEs) are associated with higher risks of future NSSI and suicide attempts, while remitted PEs do not increase the risk. Auditory hallucinatory experiences (HEs) that persist are an important but under-recognized risk factor for NSSI and suicide attempts during adolescence.
