Summary: Endurance training is linked to improved cardiorespiratory fitness and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but the causal relationship has not been determined. Genetic studies on exercise and fitness are limited due to the cost and equipment requirements for gold-standard measurement. However, self-reported physical activity data may introduce bias. Understanding the genetic variants associated with exercise and fitness could provide causal links to cardiovascular disease and enhance prevention and treatment strategies.

Genome-Wide Association Study Identifies New Genetic Determinants of Cardiorespiratory Fitness: The Trondelag Health Study

Summary: In this study, we conducted a large-scale systematic screening for genetic variants associated with cardiorespiratory fitness and identified 38 novel SNP associated with peak oxygen uptake. Two SNP were also replicated in a separate sample. Functional analyses revealed candidate genes associated with cardiac function and cardiovascular disease.
