Effects of Biophysical Processes on Diel-Cycling Hypoxia in a Subtropical Estuary

Melissa S. Duvall et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal variations of diel-cycling dissolved oxygen (DO) in a shallow estuary. The results show that the extent and duration of summertime hypoxia are modulated by freshwater discharge and vertical density stratification. Physical processes such as tides, wind, and irradiance also affect the diel fluctuations of DO.

Simulation of high-frequency dissolved oxygen dynamics in a shallow estuary, the Corsica River, Chesapeake Bay

Richard Tian et al.

Summary: Understanding shallow water biogeochemical dynamics is challenging due to various factors, and mechanistic modeling in this field has lagged behind conceptual and empirical models. This study successfully applied a state-of-the-art modeling system to the Corsica River estuary and reproduced observed high-frequency variability. It was found that physical transport plays a larger role than biogeochemical processes in dissolved oxygen budgets on an hourly time scale.

Temporal Variation of Summer Hypoxia off Changjiang Estuary During 1997-2014 and Its Association With ENSO

Xiao Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal variation of summer hypoxia along a hydrographic section from the Changjiang River mouth to Cheju Island. It finds that the dissolved oxygen values show significant interannual variation and are strongly influenced by the El Nino-Southern Oscillation cycle. In summer, the probability of dissolved oxygen depletion off the Changjiang Estuary increases during the decaying phase of El Nino.

Reducing Hypoxia in an Urban Estuary Despite Climate Warming

Michael M. Whitney et al.

Summary: The study highlights the impact of managed nitrogen load reductions and climate change on hypoxia in Long Island Sound. Despite reductions in total nitrogen concentrations, warming bottom waters favor hypoxia. While bottom dissolved oxygen has increased, warming-induced solubility decreases erode some of these gains. Implementing nitrogen load reduction measures can mitigate the effects of warming-induced oxygen solubility decline.
