The incidence and prevalence of epilepsy in the United Kingdom 2013-2018: A retrospective cohort study of UK primary care data

Summary: The purpose of this study was to update the incidence and prevalence calculations for epilepsy in the United Kingdom and its constituent nations. Data from primary care practices were used, and the study found that the overall prevalence and incidence of epilepsy in the UK are comparable to other high income countries. There is significant geographical variation and a potential link between deprivation and epilepsy.

Who cares? A scoping review on intellectual disability, epilepsy and social care

Summary: Nearly a quarter of people with Intellectual disability (PwID) have epilepsy, and the interface between social and health care services is important for supporting their epilepsy needs. However, there is limited research into the role of social care in managing epilepsy in PwID. This study identified four key areas of social care involvement: staff training and education, emergency seizure management, holistic approach to care, and nocturnal monitoring and supervision.

Tackling increased risks in older adults with intellectual disability and epilepsy: Data from a national multicentre cohort study

Summary: People with intellectual disabilities are more prone to suffering from multiple diseases, including epilepsy, which leads to worse clinical outcomes. This study focused on adults with intellectual disabilities and epilepsy, comparing those aged over 40 with those under 40. The results showed that older adults had higher levels of co-morbidity, medication use, and were less likely to have a co-morbid neurodevelopmental disorder or an epilepsy care plan.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate HR-QOL priorities identified by adults with IDD-E and caregivers, comparing them with those of adults with epilepsy without IDD. The results showed that health-related quality of life was significantly lower in adults with IDD-E, with priorities such as seizure burden, medication side effects, and family impact being identified. Priorities for improving HR-QOL differed between adults with and without IDD-E, with concerns about family impact and transition to adult care being more significant among those with IDD-E.

People with epilepsy and intellectual disability: More than a sum of two conditions

Summary: The study compared characteristics and treatment practices of two cohorts of people with Intellectual Disability and epilepsy in England and the Netherlands. The Dutch cohort had higher rates of physical comorbidities, less mental or behavioral disorders, and more use of antipsychotic medication. The most commonly prescribed drug in both centers was valproate, with a higher proportion of the Dutch cohort on three or more antiepileptic drugs.
