Stress phenotypes in epilepsy: impact on cognitive functioning and quality of life

Judit Catalan-Aguilar et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish phenotypes according to how patients face a stressful condition (epilepsy) and examine differences in cognition and quality of life depending on these phenotypes. The results suggest that dealing with stress in patients with epilepsy is related to cognitive performance and quality of life. These findings underline the relevance of considering comorbidities in epilepsy and may be useful for detecting vulnerable or resilient profiles as risk or protective factors for cognitive and quality of life decline.

Mood Disturbances, Anxiety, and Impact on Quality of Life in Patients Admitted to Epilepsy Monitoring Units

Rodrigo Rocamora et al.

Summary: Anxiety, depression, and decreased quality of life are highly prevalent in patients with drug-refractory epilepsy and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, especially more severe in females. These symptoms were often undiagnosed previously and should be considered in clinical practice for tailored approaches.

Anxiety and Depression in Newly Diagnosed Epilepsy: A Matter of Psychological History?

Natacha Forthoffer et al.

Summary: Anxiety symptoms are common at the time of epilepsy diagnosis, associated with psychiatric history and psychological trauma, while depressive symptoms are less prevalent but linked to similar mental health histories. Regular screening and monitoring for anxiety and depression in newly diagnosed epileptic patients, especially those with a history of psychological trauma or psychiatric disorders, is essential for their care. Long-term follow-up is needed to determine the impact of these factors and the mental health symptoms on the future course of treatment.

Anxiety symptoms are the strongest predictor of quality of life in temporal lobe epilepsy

Ellen Marise Lima et al.

Summary: It is established that the severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms is associated with poorer quality of life in persons with drug-resistant epilepsy. Persons with temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS) have higher odds of presenting subsyndromic depressive episodes (SDEs) and subsyndromic anxiety episodes (SAEs) compared to healthy controls, and anxiety trait symptoms are the most critical individual determinant of the quality of life.

Systematic Literature Review of Psychiatric Comorbidities in Adults with Epilepsy

Elaine Lu et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review of recent original research found a relatively high prevalence of mental health comorbidities in people with epilepsy. Mood and anxiety disorders are the most common comorbidities, while psychotic spectrum conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are much rarer. The prevalence of comorbidity may vary with the epilepsy type and treatment responsiveness.
