Firearm Availability, Homicide, and the Context of Structural Disadvantage

Daniel C. Semenza et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the availability of legal and illegal firearms and the homicide rates in American cities, and finds that the availability of illegal firearms is associated with firearm homicide rates, while the ratio of legal firearms dealers does not have a significant influence. Furthermore, this relationship is dependent on the level of economic disadvantage in the cities.

The Dynamics of Race, Place, and Homicide Context in the Relationship between Firearm Dealers and Gun Violence

Daniel C. Semenza et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the concentration of legal firearm dealers and firearm homicide in 27 states. The results suggest that a greater concentration of firearm dealers in surrounding counties increases the risk for firearm homicide with White victims, while a greater concentration of firearm dealers within counties increases the risk for intimate partner homicide when the victim is Black.

Public guns, private violence: The association of city-level firearm availability and intimate partner homicide in the United States

Richard Stansfield et al.

Summary: This study found that in large cities in the United States, a higher rate of federally licensed firearm dealers was associated with an increased risk of intimate partner homicide. This association was more pronounced in states with lower-than-average existing gun ownership, and was robust to different analytical methods and ways of capturing illegal guns.

Criminal charge history, handgun purchasing, and demographic characteristics of legal handgun purchasers in California

Veronica A. Pear et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the characteristics of legal handgun purchasers in California in 2001 and found that over 16% of purchasers had a criminal charge history at the time of purchase, including violent crimes and firearm-related crimes. Despite stringent firearm purchase laws in California, a significant proportion of handgun purchasers had a criminal history, which may be even higher in states with less restrictive firearm purchasing eligibility criteria.
