Neurotoxic effects of exposure to glyphosate in rat striatum: Effects and mechanisms of action on dopaminergic neurotransmission

Carmen Costas-Ferreira et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects and mechanisms of action of glyphosate and a glyphosate-based herbicide on dopaminergic neurotransmission in the rat striatum. Findings showed that glyphosate increased dopamine release and impaired motor control, as well as decreased acetylcholinesterase activity and antioxidant capacity. Two possible mechanisms, increased dopamine release and inhibition of dopamine transporter, were suggested to explain the effects of glyphosate.

Differential regulation of Cav3.2 and Cav2.2 calcium channels by CB1 receptors and cannabidiol

Summary: Cannabinoids are a potential therapy for chronic pain, but their analgesic efficacy is often not reported in clinical trials. This study found that cannabinoids can produce analgesia by inhibiting voltage gate calcium channels, and different cannabinoids target different types of channels through distinct mechanisms. The cannabinoid CBD binds to and occludes the pore of the Ca(v)3.2 channel, alleviating inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

Glyphosate targets fish monoaminergic systems leading to oxidative stress and anxiety

Melissa Faria et al.

Summary: Glyphosate, the active ingredient in many herbicides, has been found to have neurotoxic effects, including increased anxiety and altered social behaviors in adult zebrafish exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations. Changes in neurotransmitter levels and antioxidant defense systems were observed in the brains of exposed fish, suggesting potential negative impacts on fish survival and human health from chronic low-dose exposures commonly found in aquatic ecosystems.
