Untargeted analysis of environmental contaminants in surface snow samples of Svalbard Islands by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry

Benedetta Giannelli Moneta et al.

Summary: There is increasing concern on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), including various chemicals, found even in remote polar regions. In a study conducted during the 2021 spring campaign in Ny-Alesund, sixteen surface snow samples were collected and analyzed using LC-HRMS/MS. Among the 114 compounds identified, over 80 have commercial or industrial uses, suggesting anthropogenic origin. However, no clear contamination trend was observed, and comparison with aerosol samples did not provide conclusive evidence of the pollution source.

High-resolution temporal wastewater treatment plant investigation to understand influent mass flux of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

Drew Szabo et al.

Summary: This study identifies sources of PFAS in WWTPs and reveals previously undescribed variability in daily PFAS concentrations by measuring their occurrence every hour over a week. The concentrations of 50 PFAS vary from 89 +/- 38 ng L-1 on Monday to 173 +/- 110 ng L-1 on Friday, with PFCAs, diPAPs, and PFSAs contributing the most. Simultaneous pulse events of PFOS and PFHpS indicate significant industrial or commercial waste discharge that persists for up to 3 hours.

Non-target screening of emerging contaminants in landfills: A review

Maria -Christina Nika et al.

Summary: Leachate from landfills is a significant source of contamination, posing a threat to ecosystems and resources. Monitoring, effective treatment processes, and target, suspect, and non-target screening are necessary. Recent publications reviewing the chemical composition of landfill leachates and groundwater wells are discussed, covering sample preparation, instrumental analysis, data acquisition, and processing. Additionally, limitations, research gaps, and future perspectives are explored, along with proposed advances in non-target screening for comprehensive chemical characterization of landfill samples.

Non-targeted screening of emerging contaminants in South African surface and wastewater

Ovokeroye Akpojevwe Abafe et al.

Summary: In this study, a non-targeted screening workflow was used to identify known and unknown pollutants in South African waste and surface waters. A total of 315 compounds were confidently identified, including pharmaceuticals, drugs, metabolites, biological compounds, industrial chemicals, personal care products, pesticides, and food additives. The study also revealed the presence of several contaminants of public health concern that have not been previously studied in wastewater-based epidemiological studies. The findings provide a detailed list of priority contaminants for future targeted analysis studies.

Persistence and removal of trace organic compounds in centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment systems

Natalie Mladenov et al.

Summary: The study utilized comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time of flight mass spectrometry to evaluate common persistent and removed compounds in centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment systems in the USA and South Africa. Results showed that the DEWATS treatment system was able to remove more compounds compared to the centralized WWTPs. Additionally, removal efficiencies of chemicals were similar between the treatment plants when compared according to the number of chemical features detected in the influents and effluents of each treatment plant.

Antiretroviral Drugs in Water: An African Challenge with Kenya and South Africa as Hotspots and Plausible Remediation Strategies

Andile Bheki Zitha et al.

Summary: The occurrence of antiretroviral drugs in water bodies, especially in the African continent, is a major concern due to their potential toxicity and drug resistance. Remediation strategies involving synthetic adsorbents, modified natural materials, degradation methods, and aquatic plants have been investigated, but the focus on these strategies is limited in Africa, possibly due to their high cost. This review highlights the prevalence of antiretroviral drug pollution in African water systems, evaluates current remediation processes, and suggests areas for future research.
