Advances in emission control of diesel vehicles in China

Guangyan Xu et al.

Summary: Diesel vehicles in China have caused serious environmental problems, prompting the government to take serious actions against air pollution and impose stricter regulations on diesel vehicle emissions in the latest China VI standard. To comply with these regulations, two major technical routes, EGR and SCR, have been developed for diesel engines. Additionally, complicated aftertreatment technologies, including DOC, DPF, SCR, and ASC, have been developed for emission control. Integration of the aftertreatment system with the engine system is necessary to meet the stringent requirements of the China VI standard, and further upgrades will be needed for near-zero emission targets in the future.

Emission trends of air pollutants and CO2 in China from 2005 to 2021

Shengyue Li et al.

Summary: China has compiled an emission inventory of air pollutants and CO2 from 2005 to 2021, and the study shows that mitigation policies have successfully decoupled air pollutant and CO2 emissions from economic development since 2013. The study also highlights the potential for synergistic emission reduction in different sectors and regions of China.

Vehicular ammonia emissions: an underappreciated emission source indensely populated areas

Yifan Wen et al.

Summary: This study found that on-road ammonia (NH3) emissions in urban areas of China play a significant role in the formation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and pose severe risks to human health. The study also revealed that vehicular NH3 emissions are highly concentrated in densely populated areas, even surpassing agricultural emissions. These findings provide valuable insights into the absolute value and relative importance of on-road NH3 emissions in different regions, seasons, and population densities in China.

The Characteristics of Light-Duty Passenger Vehicle Mileage and Impact Analysis in China from a Big Data Perspective

Dong Ma et al.

Summary: This study used big data methods to analyze the activity level characteristics of the light-duty passenger vehicle fleet in China. It found that the annual mileage of vehicles does not significantly decay with vehicle age. The average mileage of private passenger cars in China in 2019 was 10,300 km/year, while the taxi fleet had an average mileage of 80,000 km/year. Due to the pandemic, the annual mileage dropped by 22% in 2020. These findings provide important data support for future environmental and climate benefit assessments.

Characterizing start emissions of gasoline vehicles and the seasonal, diurnal and spatial variabilities in China

Yifan Wen et al.

Summary: This study focused on measuring start emissions of gaseous pollutants and solid particle number from gasoline light-duty passenger vehicles in China, with a particular emphasis on the impact of cold-start conditions. The results showed that cold-start phase contributes significantly to total tailpipe emissions, and that emissions vary by pollutant, vehicle technology, and environmental conditions. The study also revealed seasonal, diurnal, and spatial variabilities in LDPV emissions, providing valuable insights for emission inventory and air quality simulation improvements.

Novel Method for Ozone Isopleth Construction and Diagnosis for the Ozone Control Strategy of Chinese Cities

Huizhong Shen et al.

Summary: Ozone (O-3) isopleths illustrate the nonlinear responses of O-3 concentrations to changes in nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), playing a crucial role in determining O-3 control requirements. Severe O-3 pollution was observed in China in 2017, with significant variations in O-3 responses to emissions of precursors across different cities. City-specific O-3 isopleths generated in this study are essential for developing hybrid and differentiated strategies for O-3 abatement in China.

Assessment of In-Use NOx Emissions from Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles Equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems

Yi Tan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the NOx emissions of 277 heavy-duty diesel vehicles from three portable emission measurement system testing programs. The research found that some HDDVs had significantly higher NOx emissions than certification standards even under ideal exhaust temperatures. The correlation between emissions and mileage was weak, with some trucks showing extremely high emission increase rates within the first 15,000 miles of operation.

Sensitivities of Ozone Air Pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Area to Local and Upwind Precursor Emissions Using Adjoint Modeling

Xiaolin Wang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the sensitivity of ozone pollution in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei to both local emissions and precursors from the southern provinces, particularly on heavily polluted days. By reducing NOx emissions from industrial processes and transportation, as well as harmful substances from industrial processes and paint use, effective mitigation of ozone pollution in the region can be achieved.

Mitigation potential of black carbon emissions from on-road vehicles in China

Shaojun Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the black carbon (BC) emissions from on-road transportation in China and establishes an updated inventory. The research shows that comprehensive control policies in the past have significantly reduced BC emissions, and there is still great potential for further reduction in the future through stringent control policies and advanced technologies. Various scenarios suggest substantial BC emission reductions can be achieved in the future.
