Iron-Facilitated Organic Radical Formation from Secondary Organic Aerosols in Surrogate Lung Fluid

Jinlai Wei et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the deposition of fine particles and iron in the respiratory system can generate organic radicals in surrogate lungfluid (SLF). Iron ions significantly enhance the yield of organic radicals by facilitating the decomposition of organic peroxides. Ascorbate mediates the redox cycling of iron ions to sustain the decomposition of organic peroxides. In addition, antioxidants are efficient at scavenging hydroxyl radicals and superoxide.

On the Relative Contribution of Iron and Organic Compounds, and Their Interaction in Cellular Oxidative Potential of Ambient PM2.5

Yixiang Wang et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that organic compounds and metals play important roles in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, but their contribution has not been adequately quantified. This study developed a new fractionation method to remove different classes of organic compounds and metals step by step. The results showed that most of the cellular ROS in PM2.5 samples were attributed to the metallic fraction. Additionally, the study found that water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) may enhance the water solubility and macrophage ROS activity through complexation with iron, revealing the roles of organic compounds and iron through different mechanisms in the generation of PM2.5-driven cellular ROS.

Highly oxygenated organic molecules with high unsaturation formed upon photochemical aging of soot

Meng Li et al.

Summary: The study finds that large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can generate highly oxygenated organic molecules during the process of photochemical oxidation, which contribute to atmospheric secondary organic aerosol. The formation mechanism of these organic molecules plays a significant role in the fate and effects of combustion aerosols in the atmosphere.

Superoxide Release by Macrophages through NADPH Oxidase Activation Dominating Chemistry by Isoprene Secondary Organic Aerosols and Quinones to Cause Oxidative Damage on Membranes

Ting Fang et al.

Summary: Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) can activate oxidases in macrophages to release superoxide, leading to oxidative stress. Among them, phenanthrenequinone (PQN) is more toxic. These findings provide a basis for further understanding of the adverse health effects and oxidative stress caused by fine particulate matter.

Comparison of oxidative potential of PM1 and PM2.5 urban aerosol and bioaccessibility of associated elements in three simulated lung fluids

H. Cigankova et al.

Summary: Most elements showed higher bioaccessibility in the submicron fraction compared to the fine size fraction, which also varied between the three simulated lung fluids (SLFs). The bioaccessibility of elements is influenced by their chemical compound and the composition of the solution. The oxidative potential (OP) of urban particulate matter (PM) was found to be significantly affected by the composition of the simulated lung fluids. The correlation between certain elements and DTT activity suggest their involvement in the oxidative activity of PM.

Secondary organic aerosol association with cardiorespiratory disease mortality in the United States

Havala O. T. Pye et al.

Summary: Research in the United States has shown that the secondary organic aerosol component of fine particle pollution is significantly associated with cardiorespiratory mortality, independent of total PM2.5 mass. The county-level variability in SOA is associated with 3.5 times greater cardiorespiratory mortality compared to PM2.5, and SOA has a mortality rate 6.5 times higher per mass than PM2.5.

Low-Molecular-Weight Carboxylic Acids in the Southeastern US: Formation, Partitioning, and Implications for Organic Aerosol Aging

Yunle Chen et al.

Summary: Carboxylic acids play important roles in both particle and gas phases in the atmosphere, with their sources and partitioning not entirely understood. Isoprene is identified as a key precursor for LMWCA, with monocarboxylic acids likely formed through gas-phase photochemical reactions and dicarboxylic acids predominantly from aqueous processing. Unexpectedly high concentrations of particle-phase formic and acetic acids, possibly components of long-range transport OA, were observed. Additionally, a strong correlation between particulate LMWCA and aged SOA suggests a potential link to boundary layer dynamics.

Secondary organic aerosols from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds contribute substantially to air pollution mortality

Benjamin A. Nault et al.

Summary: The production of ASOA is strongly correlated with the reactivity of specific anthropogenic volatile organic compounds, with differences in ASOA production between cities explained by variations in emissions of aromatics and intermediate- and semi-volatile organic compounds. An improved model estimates that ASOA contributes to 340,000 PM2.5-related premature deaths per year, over an order of magnitude higher than previous studies. However, the extrapolation from cities with detailed studies to regions with larger uncertainties in emissions is a limitation of this study. Further development of institutional air quality management infrastructure and comprehensive air quality campaigns in specific regions are needed for progress in this area.

Source contributions to multiple toxic potentials of atmospheric organic aerosols

Akihiro Fushimi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated source contributions to the toxic potentials of organic aerosols in the atmosphere by conducting chemical and biological assays, revealing significant differences in contributions among sources. Urban and roadside samples showed stronger toxic potentials per organic carbon, while remote samples in summer had weaker toxic potentials, indicating that atmospheric aging decreased toxicity. Samples from forest and biogenic secondary organic aerosols exhibited relatively low toxic potentials, suggesting lower toxicity of biogenic particles.
