Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in lotus from a lake historically polluted by the chlor-alkali industry: Occurrence, organ distribution and health risk from dietary intake

Rui Du et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution and exposure risk of PCDD/Fs from dietary intake of lotus in Ya-er Lake, a lake historically polluted by the chlor-alkali industry in Hubei Province, Central China. The findings indicated that PCDD/Fs accumulated significantly in lotus roots and leaves, posing a health hazard to residents who consume lotus products long term.

PCDD/Fs characteristics in flue gas and surrounding environment of iron and steel smelting industry

Mingxiu Zhan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and distributions of PCDD/Fs in the iron and steel smelting industry in China, as well as emission factors, potential sources in ambient air and soil. Results showed that PCDFs contributed more than PCDDs in flue gas and ambient air, while the opposite was observed in soil. Most ambient air samples were affected by emission from ISSIs, but the concentrations of PCDD/Fs in soil were not influenced by ISSI emissions.

Release of legacy mercury and effect of aquaculture on mercury biogeochemical cycling in highly polluted Ya-Er Lake, China

Lufeng Chen et al.

Summary: The research indicates that despite the closure of a nearby chlor-alkali plant for three decades, legacy mercury stored in sediment continues to impact the ecosystem, and aquaculture may increase methylmercury production and control its distribution in polluted aquatic ecosystems, potentially posing health risks to surrounding residents through fish consumption.

Global status of dioxin emission and China's role in reducing the emission

Rongrong Lei et al.

Summary: This study compiled the global status of dioxin emissions across 150 countries/regions, using China as an example. It found that open burning processes were the most important sources of dioxins globally, with emissions in developed countries remaining low and stable, while those in developing countries remained high. China's dioxin emissions have been stable around 9 kg TEQ, with industries such as metal production and waste incineration having significant potential for reduction.

Bridging the Energy Benefit and POPs Emission Risk from Waste Incineration

Cui Li et al.

Summary: A comprehensive evaluation of organic pollutant emissions from solid waste incineration in China was conducted, and the Energy Benefit-to-Emission Index (EBEIOP) was proposed to assess solid waste management. Provinces with higher EBEIOP values showed significant correlations between net energy benefit and pollutant emission, with economic factors influencing higher values and emission from incineration of medical and industrial waste influencing lower values. A recommended EBEIOP value of >= 60 can guide decision-making for profitable solid waste management.
