A review of atmospheric individual particle analyses: Methodologies and applications in environmental research

Longyi Shao et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics, mixing state, and heterogeneous chemical reactions of individual aerosol particles obtained with electron microscopes. The techniques of individual particle analyses are briefly summarized and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The effects of aerosol particles on the environment, climate, human health, and global geochemical cycles are also discussed based on the data from individual particle analyses. Challenges faced in individual particle studies are prospected.

Traffic-derived magnetite pollution in soils along a highway on the Tibetan Plateau

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of traffic-derived magnetite particles in roadside soils on the Tibetan Plateau, revealing high levels of magnetite and associations with anthropogenic activities. The sources of magnetite particles were identified as mainly from traffic emissions, particularly wear particles, rather than natural sources. These findings highlight the impact of anthropogenic magnetite pollution from traffic emission on near-road residents.

Stable Iron Isotopic Signature Reveals Multiple Sources of Magnetic Particulate Matter in the 2021 Beijing Sandstorms

Peijie Zuo et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the pollution level of magnetic particulate matters (MPs) in PM2.5 increased significantly during the 2021 Beijing sandstorm episodes, with anthropogenic emissions playing a major role. These findings are essential for evaluating the health risks and climatic impacts of PM2.5, particularly MPs, during sandstorm episodes.

ACCURATE INSTANCE SEGMENTATION VIA COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

Tianyou Chen et al.

Summary: CoMask is an instance segmentation model that effectively alleviates scale variation and addresses precise localization. By using a multi-scale feature extraction module and a channel attention mechanism, it can extract multi-scale and multi-level features. The proposed collaborative learning framework computes coarse masks and regresses position-sensitive dense offsets for precise localization. Experimental results demonstrate that CoMask is competitive with state-of-the-art models.

BPFINet: Boundary-aware progressive feature integration network for salient object detection

Tianyou Chen et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel network BPFINet is proposed to address the issues of resolution differences and misclassification of boundary pixels by gradually aggregating low-level details, high-level semantics, and global information through different modules. Experimental results demonstrate the competitiveness of BPFINet against 16 other state-of-the-art methods.
