Interface hydrogen bonding dominated perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) accumulation by iron particles in drinking water pipes

Yuan Zhuang et al.

Summary: Iron particles are a key factor in the discoloration of drinking water distribution systems (DWDS), but their mechanism in the accumulation of trace organic pollutants in DWDS is unclear. This study investigated the accumulation mechanisms of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using iron-based pipes from a real DWDS. Results showed that old unlined pipes had a higher capacity for PFOA accumulation than new pipes. Among the corrosion products in old pipes, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 showed no significant accumulation, while FeOOH had a strong accumulation effect for PFOA. In-situ formed iron particles contributed more to PFOA accumulation, and PFOA caused an increase in turbidity and particle size of in-situ formed iron particles.

Decomposition of Total Organic Halogen Formed during Chlorination: The Iceberg of Halogenated Disinfection Byproducts Was Previously Underestimated

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was discovered that the level of TOX in chlorinated waters had been significantly underestimated under common analytical conditions. The addition of quenching agent sodium thiosulfate resulted in a two-phase decomposition pattern of total organic chlorine and total organic bromine, indicating the important toxicological significance of the DBPs responsible for TOX decomposition. Nontarget analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry revealed the molecular formulas for the decomposed TOX, and it was found that the level of unknown TOX in chlorinated waters was considerably higher than previously thought.

Effects of pipe materials on the characteristic recognition, disinfection byproduct formation, and toxicity risk of pipe wall biofilms during chlorination in water supply pipelines

Xiaoshu Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contributions of biofilms to disinfection byproduct formation in engineered water systems. The biofilms on different types of water supply pipes show significant differences in growth, morphology, organic components, and bacterial diversity. The extracellular polymeric substance secreted by the biofilm plays a crucial role in disinfection byproduct formation. Nitrogenous disinfection byproducts demonstrate higher toxicity potentials in the biofilms compared to carbonaceous disinfection byproducts.

Formation of disinfection byproducts in an ammonia-polluted source water with UV/chlorine treatment followed by post-chlorination: A pilot-scale study

Xinran Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from an ammonia-polluted water source treated by a pilot-scale ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process with subsequent post-chlorination. The results indicated that DBP formation was influenced by pH, chlorine doses, and reaction times, highlighting the importance of carefully determining these factors during UV/chlorine treatment to manage DBP formation effectively.

Does Snowfall Introduce Disinfection By-product Precursors to Surface Water?

Zhenqi Du et al.

Summary: Snow with large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity can effectively adsorb atmospheric pollutants, leading to an increase in disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors in surface water. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) in meltwater is mainly composed of low molecular weight organics with low aromaticity and high unsaturation. DBP formation and cytotoxicity indexes in chlorinated meltwater are positively correlated with air quality index and are influenced by snowfall stages. The yield of halonitromethanes in meltwater is significantly higher than that in surface water.

Impact of initial chlorine concentration on water quality change in old unlined iron pipes

Donghan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water quality changes in UIP section reactors under different initial chlorine dosages. The results showed that chlorine disappeared rapidly in the UIP. Water with higher initial chlorine had higher turbidity in a short time, but for a longer retention time, the highest turbidity was observed in the iron pipe without initial chlorine. Furthermore, an increase in adenosine triphosphate and heterotrophic plate count was observed with the increase of initial chlorine. Polysaccharide and protein levels also increased with the increase of initial chlorine, promoting the formation of a protective layer to inhibit corrosion.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of TCAA on iron oxidation processes, and the potential effects of resulting α-FeOOH particles on bacterial community and human cells. TCAA promoted iron oxidation process and resulted in sharper particle surfaces, affecting bacterial community richness differently under anaerobic and aerobic conditions.

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter from Wildfire-induced Microcystis aeruginosa Blooms controlled by Copper Sulfate as Disinfection Byproduct Precursors Using APPI(-) and ESI(-) FT-ICR MS

Huan Chen et al.

Summary: Copper-based algaecides are used to control algae blooms after wildfires, leading to higher reactivity of dissolved organic matter in forming disinfectant byproducts. The disappeared DOM during disinfection had higher average molecular weight and double-bond equivalent, indicating larger MW and more double bonds/rings as preferable DBP precursors. The treatments with Cu2+ addition showed higher reactivity in forming N-nitrosodimethylamine, while the control group without Cu2+ had lower DOM chlorine reactivity in forming carbonaceous and oxygenated DBPs.

Formation and control of C- and N-DBPs during disinfection of filter backwash and sedimentation sludge water in drinking water treatment

Yunkun Qian et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of disinfection conditions, water quality parameters, and bromide concentration on controlling the formation of disinfection byproducts during the disinfection process. Extended chlorination and increased chlorine doses were found to increase DBP formation and toxicity, while chloramine disinfection promoted the formation of N-DBPs.
