The fate and behavior of petroleum biomarkers in diluted bitumen and conventional crude oil exposed to natural sunlight in simulated seawater

Zeyu Yang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the photolytic behavior of representative petroleum biomarkers. It was found that aromatic steranes remain stable, while BSs, ADs, and DAs are less stable. Therefore, aromatic steranes can be used to evaluate the photolytic behavior of petroleum hydrocarbons, while BSs, ADs, and DAs should not be used for this purpose.

Summary: This study simulated spills in a laboratory setting to generate hydrocarbon oxidation products from crude oil and diesel. The analysis of these products revealed their chemical characteristics and compositional changes, providing a comprehensive approach to monitor oxidation product changes in oil spills.

Sunlight-driven dissolution is a major fate of oil at sea

Danielle Haas Freeman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photo-dissolution process of crude oil components at sea and its sensitivity to environmental variables. Through experimental quantification, it is found that the rate of photo-dissolution is most sensitive to oil slick thickness, season/latitude, and wavelength. The estimated percentage of surface oil subject to photo-dissolution in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill is comparable to other fate processes.

Oil Irradiation Experiments Document Changes in Oil Properties, Molecular Composition, and Dispersant Effectiveness Associated with Oil Photo-Oxidation

Christoph Aeppli et al.

Summary: Oil photo-oxidation decreases the effectiveness of dispersants, driven by increased oil viscosity. Laboratory dispersant tests underestimate the dispersion of photo-oxidized oil in the field. Thus, prompt dispersant application is crucial for effective oil spill response.

Modeling Emulsification Influence on Oil Properties and Fate to Inform Effective Spill Response

Deborah P. French-McCay et al.

Summary: Water-in-oil emulsification affects the fate and exposure of spilled oil by increasing its viscosity. The increase in viscosity prolongs floating oil exposure and makes it more likely to come ashore. Emulsification also restricts entrainment and slows evaporation, while increasing dissolved concentrations in the water column.

PAH depletion in weathered oil slicks estimated from modeled age-at-sea during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

Larissa Montas et al.

Summary: This study estimated the age-at-sea of weathered oil slicks using a modeling system and used this information to interpret PAH concentration measurements. The study found that the mean percent depletion of PAHs increased with estimated age-at-sea. Alkylated PAHs showed less depletion compared to parent PAHs.

Unique Molecular Features of Water-Soluble Photo-Oxidation Products among Refined Fuels, Crude Oil, and Herded Burnt Residue under High Latitude Conditions

Elizabeth A. Whisenhant et al.

Summary: Photo-oxidized petroleum hydrocarbons are a unique class of water-soluble bioavailable compounds that have gained recognition as an urgent research need in high latitudes. Bench-scale spills of refined fuels were irradiated over Alaskan seawater and freshwater, revealing that these fuels produce more photoproducts than crude oil and carry a unique chemical signature. This research highlights the importance of considering marine biota toxicity and suggests the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy for tracking photo-modified water-soluble fractions of petroleum in high latitudes.

Summary: The DOISST v2.0 dataset exhibited cold biases in certain oceans due to the lack of drifting-buoy SST data ingestion, resulting in discrepancies with Argo observations. By conducting experiments and upgrading to version 2.1, biases were effectively reduced in the global ocean and Indian Ocean.

Oil fate and mass balance for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

Deborah P. French-McCay et al.

Summary: According to oil fate modeling of the Deepwater Horizon spill, the majority of the oil either surfaced or entered the deep plume sediment. A small percentage was removed by responders, and a portion remained in the water column. Non-volatile and soluble fractions degraded by the end of August, leaving residual oil to potentially settle. The model estimates were validated through field observations of floating oil and atmospheric emissions.

A Coupled Lagrangian-Earth System Model for Predicting Oil Photooxidation

Ana C. Vaz et al.

Summary: During the Deepwater Horizon blowout, photooxidation of surface oil led to the formation of persistent compounds that can still be found in shoreline sediments a decade later. A new Lagrangian photooxidation module has been developed to estimate the impact of solar radiation on oil droplets in the ocean, quantifying the likelihood of photooxidative changes and tracking the transport of these compounds. This dynamic coupling provides a powerful tool to refine oil budget calculations and inform rapid response strategies for future oil spills.
