A Novel Strategy to Directly Quantify Polyethylene Microplastics in PM2.5 Based on Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Peiru Luo et al.

Summary: The widespread use of plastic products has led to a significant release of microplastics (MPs) into the environment. However, the study of MPs in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is limited due to the lack of appropriate analytical methods. This study developed a novel strategy using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (Pyr-GC-MS/MS) to accurately quantify polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) in PM2.5 without sample pretreatment. The results showed relatively serious pollution of PE-MPs in Taiyuan and suggested the widespread occurrence and potential human exposure risks of PM2.5-bound PE-MPs.

A Preliminary Assessment of Size-Fractionated Microplastics in Indoor Aerosol-Kuwait's Baseline

Saif Uddin et al.

Summary: This study collected microplastic (MP) samples from indoor environments in Kuwait and found that different locations and types of air conditioning had a significant impact on MP concentration, while the presence or absence of carpets did not have a significant effect. This provides the first baseline data on MPs in Kuwait and highlights the need for standardized protocols for collecting MPs in the <= 2.5 μm fraction.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Influence of particle characteristics, heating temperature and time on the pyrolysis product distributions of polystyrene micro- and nano-plastics

Qingcun Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the effects of pyrolysis temperature, time, particle source, size, and mass on the pyrolysis efficiency and product distribution of polystyrene (PS) micro-and nanoplastics (MNPs). The results showed that pyrolysis temperature and time significantly influenced the pyrolysis efficiency, while the mass of MNPs affected the distribution of pyrolysis products. The study proposed optimal pyrolysis conditions for PS determination using Py-GC/MS.

Kushani Perera et al.

Summary: This study discovered airborne microplastics in indoor and outdoor air in Sri Lanka. Indoor microplastic concentrations were higher than outdoor concentrations and were related to indoor-generating sources, vacuum use, and occupants' lifestyles. The highest outdoor microplastic abundance was found near an industrial zone. The dominant microplastic type was polyethylene terephthalate, followed by polyester.
