Enhanced Microbial Ferrihydrite Reduction by Pyrogenic Carbon: Impact of Graphitic Structures

Wentao Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of pyrogenic carbon (PC) in mediating microbial reduction of ferrihydrite. Results show that PC enhances microbial ferrihydrite reduction, with higher pyrolysis temperatures leading to greater reduction rates. The study highlights the importance of both oxygen-containing functional groups and graphitic structures of PC in electron shuttling.

Unexpected Persistent Production of Reactive Oxygen Species during the Degradation of Black Phosphorous in the Darkness

Wanchao Yu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that persistent generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is involved in the self-degradation of few-layer black phosphorus (FLBP) even in the dark, and the patterns and mechanism of ROS generation are revealed. The ability of FLBP to remove rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) under dark conditions further indicates the generation of ROS during FLBP self-degradation. This work provides new insights into the self-degradation mechanism of FLBP and opens opportunities for practical applications.

Langmuir-Blodgett based growth of rGO wrapped TiO2 nanostructures and their photocatalytic performance

Pavan K. Narayanam et al.

Summary: The GO-TiO2 nanocomposite sheets were transferred onto solid substrates using Langmuir-Blodgett method and subjected to heat treatment to obtain rGO-wrapped TiO2 nanostructures. The heat treatment conditions significantly influenced the reduction of GO, crystalline phases of TiO2, and the development of composite nanostructures. Photocatalytic studies showed strong dependence of photo-degradation on the morphology of the nanocomposite sheets.

High Sample Throughput LED Reactor for Facile Characterization of the Quantum Yield Spectrum of Photochemically Produced Reactive Intermediates

Binbin Wu et al.

Summary: This study examines the importance of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs) in aquatic biogeochemical processes and reveals the significant impact of spectra on their productions. Understanding the spectrum-dependence of PPRI productions can advance our knowledge of biogeochemical processes and pollutant dynamics. These findings emphasize the importance of considering both intensity and spectrum in determining PPRI productions and transformations under varying spatial-temporal and climatic conditions.

Hydrothermally reduced graphene oxide as a sensing material for electrically transduced pH sensors

Selvaraj Chinnathambi et al.

Summary: A reagent-less sensing probe using hydrothermally reduced graphene oxide (HRGO) was developed for potentiometric and chemiresistive pH sensing. The HRGO modified electrode showed good sensitivity for pH measurements, with stable performance in a wide pH range for potentiometric sensing. The electrochemical nature of HRGO surface functionalities was explored, revealing the presence of redox-active quinone-like moieties.

New insights into the colloidal stability of graphene oxide in aquatic environment: Interplays of photoaging and proteins

Binbin Sun et al.

Summary: Wide application of graphene oxide (GO) leads to its release in aquatic environments, where it undergoes photoaging and changes in physicochemical properties. Proteins, such as bovine serum albumin (BSA), greatly influence the colloidal stability of photoaged GO. The aggregation rate constants of photoaged GO decrease as BSA concentration increases in solutions with low concentrations of electrolytes.
