Towards a circular economy for PET bottle resin using a system dynamics inspired material flow model

Tapajyoti Ghosh et al.

Summary: The increase in single-use plastic consumption has led to uncontrollable pollution on land and in the oceans. Current waste management systems are not equipped to safely dispose of plastic waste. This research aims to develop a circular economy framework for plastics to help decision makers compare end of life options and make informed investment decisions.

Understanding the EU's circular economy policies through futures of circularity

Josep Pinyol Alberich et al.

Summary: In April 2022, the European Commission released policy proposals to promote the EU's transition to a circular economy. This paper examines the circular futures embedded in the EC's CE policies using a content analysis approach. The findings reveal that the policies combine different circular futures, with dominant imaginaries of circular modernism characterized by techno-optimism and centralized governance. However, this dominance may lead to a weak version of the CE that fails to meet the EU's environmental ambitions.

Technical, Economic, and Environmental Comparison of Closed- Loop Recycling Technologies for Common Plastics

Taylor Uekert et al.

Summary: Over 400 million metric tons of plastic waste are generated globally each year, resulting in pollution and lost resources. Recycling strategies can recapture this wasted material, but there is a lack of quantitative and transparent data on the capabilities and impacts of these processes. The study develops a dataset for closed-loop polymer recycling technologies, including mechanical recycling and solvent-based dissolution of various types of plastic, to compare their economic and environmental performances, as well as material qualities. Mechanical recycling and PET glycolysis showed the best performance in terms of economic and environmental aspects, while dissolution and enzymatic hydrolysis provided the highest material qualities. The study also identified key process contributors and highlighted future research areas.

How much can chemical recycling contribute to plastic waste recycling in Europe? An assessment using material flow analysis modeling

Irdanto Saputra Lase et al.

Summary: The plastic recycling rate in Europe is low, and efforts are needed to develop recycling technology and strategies to improve circularity. This study uses material flow analysis to estimate the contribution of chemical recycling options to plastic recycling. The results show that, in the most optimistic scenario, the end-of-life recycling rate (EoL-RR) for plastic in 2030 can reach 73-80%, with 46% from mechanical recycling and 15% from chemical recycling. Closed-loop recycling and processing of "missing plastics" will be necessary to achieve these targets.

Expanding the collection portfolio of plastic packaging: Impact on quantity and quality of sorted plastic waste fractions

Martijn Roosen et al.

Summary: Expanding the curbside collection system for household plastic packaging is important for achieving the recycling targets set by the European Union. The study investigates the effects of this expansion on the quality and quantity of sorted plastic waste fractions. Results show that while the collection rate of plastic packaging increases, it is still insufficient to meet the recycling target. Further improvements in recycling technologies and packaging design are needed to increase plastic recycling rates.

Quality of recycling: Urgent and undefined

Davide Tonini et al.

Summary: Quality of recycling is a concept that lacks a clear definition and operational framework. This lack of clarity hinders the development of effective recycling and circular economy policies. This article reviews existing studies, synthesizes different approaches, and suggests a way forward for research to support circular economy policy measures and monitoring. The definition of recycling quality should consider the technical characteristics of the recyclate and its suitability for different end applications. Preserving functionality through functional recycling is crucial for resource substitution in the circular economy.

The coming wave of aluminum sheet scrap from vehicle recycling in the United States

Yongxian Zhu et al.

Summary: The study estimates the timing, scale, and composition of high value recycling of aluminum alloys, finding that aluminum ABS scrap from aluminum sheet intensive vehicles presents significant opportunities for U.S. recyclers. Through a Markov chain model, it is found that the majority of this scrap will be available for domestic processing in the U.S.

Mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories

Antoine Beylot et al.

Summary: This article proposes an approach to account for mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories, with the application to analyze the direct dissipation of mineral resources along the primary production of copper. The results show that the production of 1 kg of copper cathode generates 0.88 kg of direct dissipative flows of resources, primarily calcium carbonate, copper, and to a lower extent iron. The developed approach may change the interpretation of results regarding mineral resources in LCA and have implications on methodological aspects and data requirements.

Ruben Demets et al.

Summary: Plastics are versatile materials with varying properties, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. Evaluation of technical recycling quality is crucial for determining the potential substitution of virgin plastics with recycled materials. This study proposes a concept for calculating effective technical substitutability and assesses the application-specific functionality of commercially available recycled plastics.

Innovation in the solid waste management industry: Integrating neoclassical and complexity theory perspectives

G. L. Gaeta et al.

Summary: Despite the interest in innovation within the solid waste management (SWM) industry, there is still a lack of specific analysis on different types of innovation in each segment. This paper proposes to use complexity theory to integrate the traditional neoclassical approach, providing a comprehensive framework to analyze innovation in SWM from both market and firm perspectives. The paper outlines four main typologies of SW markets, each exhibiting different kinds of innovation.
