Simultaneous Sequestration of Humic Acid-Complexed Pb(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and As(V) by Sulfidated Zero-Valent Iron: Performance and Stability of Sequestration Products

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that sulfidated zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) can effectively sequestrate humic acid-complexed heavy metals. In contrast to unsulfidated iron, S-ZVI can completely remove heavy metals within a short period of time. The sequestration of heavy metals is controlled by the formation of metal sulfides and the enhanced corrosion of iron hydroxides, resulting in the stable immobilization of heavy metals in soil.

Sulfadiazine removal by peroxymonosulfate activation with sulfide-modified microscale zero-valent iron: Major radicals, the role of sulfur species, and particle size effect

Chen Ling et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that sulfide-modified zero-valent iron (S-Fe-0) can enhance the catalytic performance for peroxymonosulfate activation. The sulfur species formed on the Fe-0 surface play a crucial role, with S-2(-) and SO32- accelerating the conversion of Fe3+ to Fe2+. Radical quenching experiments identified center dot OH as the major contributor to sulfadiazine removal in S-Fe-0/PMS system. The study also showed that smaller Fe-0 particles (< 8 μm) were more effective in the sulfidation treatment method.

Degradation of atrazine by Ni-doped sulfidated microscale zero-valent iron: Mechanistic insights for enhanced reactivity and selectivity

Fangming Tian et al.

Summary: The sulfidation of microscale zero-valent iron particles (S/mZVI) has been widely recognized as a method to improve reactivity and selectivity. In this study, different types of nickel-sulfidated composite mZVI particles were synthesized by adjusting the sequence of nickel doping and sulfidation. The reactivity and selectivity towards atrazine in groundwater were compared, and the underlying mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that Ni/S-mZVI exhibited higher removal rate of atrazine and reduced hydrogen accumulation compared to S/mZVI. The enhanced removal rate was attributed to the generation of atom hydrogen and direct reduction mediated by electron transfer. Meanwhile, the reduced hydrogen evolution reaction in Ni/S-mZVI can be explained by the involvement of Fe oxides. Overall, the bimetallic modification of S/mZVI is a promising strategy for groundwater remediation.

Yuchao Song et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of sulfidation and emulsification treatment on the performance of nanoscale zero-valent iron in the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) in groundwater. The sulfidized and emulsified zero-valent iron (S-EZVI) can sequestrate unreacted TCE and reduce the corrosion of iron. The electric-field-enhanced S-EZVI technology showed improved performance in removing TCE under different pH conditions.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effect of NO3- on the degradation of TCE by S-ZVI and its mechanism. The results showed that NO3- did not affect the degradation pathway of TCE, but at high concentrations, it competed for electrons and led to an increase in the production of acetylene. Additionally, the presence of NO3- promoted the formation of Fe3O4, which improved the degradation efficiency of TCE.

Unveiling the Role of Sulfur in Rapid Defluorination of Florfenicol by Sulfidized Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron in Water under Ambient Conditions

Zhen Cao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the rapid dechlorination and relatively fast defluorination abilities of SNZVI nanoparticles synthesized via a modified post-sulfidation method, providing a new potential for groundwater remediation of fluorinated contaminants. The presence of Cl atoms in florfenicol increases the surface chemical reactivity for defluorination, highlighting the importance of understanding the mechanistic insights for developing new materials. The results suggest that SNZVI could be a promising technology for in situ groundwater treatment due to its enhanced reactivity and high efficiency compared to Fe-0-based technologies.

Enhancement of ball-milling on pyrite/zero-valent iron for persulfate activation on imidacloprid removal in aqueous solution: A mechanistic study

Meimei Du et al.

Summary: The study found that the ball-milled FeS2/Fe0 composite can effectively activate the persulfate (PS) oxidant to remove Imidacloprid (IMI), with the optimal mass ratio being 1:9. Increasing dosages of ball-milled FeS2/Fe0 and PS can promote IMI removal, with the optimal dosage being 0.1 g/L and 2.5 mmol/L, removing 99.8% of IMI in 60 minutes. Additionally, FeS2/Fe0 can activate PS effectively in a wide pH range from 3 to 9. The results suggest that modifying the Fe0 surface to produce FeS can enhance the catalytic efficiency and ultimately improve the removal efficiency of IMI.
