Cadmium isotope fractionation during adsorption onto calcite

Huan Peng et al.

Summary: Adsorption on mineral surfaces is a crucial process controlling the (bio)geochemical cycling of Cd. This study investigates the fractionation of Cd isotopes during Cd adsorption onto calcite, an important sink of Cd. The results show that the Cd isotope composition of calcite adsorbed components is lighter and consistent with equilibrium fractionation, and the observed fractionation is not influenced by various factors. The presence of PO43- affects the fractionation value, indicating its importance in interpreting Cd isotope signatures in nature.

Cadmium isotope fractionation and gene expression evidence for tracking sources of Cd in grains during grain filling in a soil-rice system

Songxiong Zhong et al.

Summary: The filling of rice grains is a critical period for the accumulation of excessive cadmium (Cd), but uncertainties still exist in identifying the sources of Cd enrichment in grains. In this study, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the transport and redistribution of Cd to grains during drainage and flooding. The results showed that Cd isotopes in rice plants were lighter than those in soil solutions but heavier than those in Fe plaques. Fe plaque was identified as a potential source of Cd in rice, particularly during flooding at the grain filling stage. Drainage during grain filling led to a negative fractionation of Cd from various parts of the rice plant, while flooding facilitated the transport of Cd from leaves, rachises, and husks to grains. These findings highlight the importance of ligands and transporters genes, along with isotope fractionation, in tracking the source of Cd transported to rice grains.

Cadmium uptake and transport processes in rice revealed by stable isotope fractionation and Cd-related gene expression

Songxiong Zhong et al.

Summary: The study found that flooding reduced the concentration of Cd in soil porewater, leading to a decrease in Cd uptake and transport in rice. Under non-flooded conditions, there was an upregulation of OsNRAMP1 and OsNRAMP5 genes, contributing to a more pronounced porewater-to-rice fractionation.

Chloride application weakens cadmium immobilization by lime in paddy rice soil

Jingxia Guo et al.

Summary: Contamination of agricultural products by cadmium is a global health issue, especially for rice as one of the most consumed staple food. Chloride was found to enhance the uptake and accumulation of cadmium by rice, particularly in the presence of lime. The study revealed that chloride increased the bioavailability of cadmium in soil and hindered the formation of iron plaques on rice roots, thus promoting cadmium accumulation in rice grains. Additionally, overexpression of key cadmium transporters in rice roots facilitated the translocation of cadmium from roots to shoots, resulting in higher transfer factors in different plant parts. It is therefore recommended to avoid the use of chloride-rich materials during liming of Cd-contaminated rice fields to mitigate cadmium uptake.

The risks of sulfur addition on cadmium accumulation in paddy rice under different water-management conditions

Zhe Liu et al.

Summary: The effects of exogenous sulfur (S) application on cadmium (Cd) transfer in paddy rice systems were investigated under different water-management practices. The study found that S application increased Cd concentrations in soil pore water under discontinuous flooding conditions, but slightly reduced them under continuous flooding. Additionally, S application inhibited Cd transfer from rice roots to straw and promoted its accumulation in rice roots.

Seawater intrusion induced cadmium activation via altering its distribution and transformation in paddy soil

Wenting Chi et al.

Summary: Seawater intrusion can pose environmental risks to paddy soils around estuaries, with the impacts on the availability of heavy metals still being unclear. This study found that increasing salinity levels led to higher release of Cd from soils, indicating that Cd competition by cations and complexation by anions dominated the release rather than pH. Additionally, the availability of Cd in paddy soil was found to be enhanced with increasing salinity levels, especially during drainage, indicating the importance of high salinity in influencing Cd availability in paddy soil.

Stable isotope fractionation of cadmium in the soil-rice-human continuum

Sheng-Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: The analysis of Cd isotope ratios in soil, rice grain, and human urine samples from two Cd-contaminated regions in southern China revealed a preferential enrichment of heavy Cd isotopes from soil to rice grain and from grain to urine. The fractionation of Cd isotopes in the soil-rice-human continuum is likely due to processes such as partitioning between the soil solid phase and soil solution, as well as preferential enrichment by metal transporters in humans.

Theoretical isotope fractionation of cadmium during complexation with organic ligands

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: Cd isotopes are an important tool to understand the geochemistry of Cd, with organic ligands playing a key role in controlling its toxicity and mobility. Calculations using density functional theory show that heavier Cd isotopes preferentially bind to oxygen and nitrogen donor atoms in organic ligands, while lighter Cd isotopes bind to sulfur donor atoms. This predicted equilibrium isotope fractionation will strengthen Cd isotopes as a process tracing tool in living organisms and enhance understanding of Cd isotope cycling in aquatic and terrestrial systems.

Cadmium Isotope Fractionation during Adsorption and Substitution with Iron (Oxyhydr)oxides

Xinran Yan et al.

Summary: Cadmium isotopes can be sequestered by iron (oxyhydr)oxides through adsorption and isomorphous substitution, with lighter isotopes preferentially enriched on oxide surfaces. The fractionation is affected by the distortion of CdO6 during adsorption and the transformation of minerals. Interactions with minerals can obscure both anthropogenic and natural Cd isotope characteristics, impacting the use of Cd isotopes as environmental tracers.
