Source Apportionment of Atmospheric Ammonia at 16 Sites in China Using a Bayesian Isotope Mixing Model Based on d15N-NHx Signatures

Yangyang Zhang et al.

Summary: Reducing atmospheric ammonia (NH3) emissions is crucial for improving air quality. However, the sources of NH3 emissions in different regions remain unclear, hindering the implementation of effective reduction strategies. This study in China found that both agricultural and non-agricultural sources contribute to NH3, with non-agricultural sources (such as traffic and waste) playing a significant role. It is important to address these non-agricultural sources when reducing ambient NH3 levels, even in rural regions.

Exploring global changes in agricultural ammonia emissions and their contribution to nitrogen deposition since 1980

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: Global agricultural ammonia emissions have increased significantly in the past four decades, with cropland and livestock emissions playing a major role. Wheat, maize, rice, cattle, chicken, goats, and pigs are identified as the main contributors to ammonia emissions. The lack of regulations on ammonia emissions has led to increased reduced nitrogen deposition, particularly in hotspot regions such as China, India, and the United States, where nitrogen overuse is prevalent. Reducing agricultural ammonia emissions is crucial for future efforts to reduce nitrogen deposition.

Significant contributions of combustion-related sources to ammonia emissions

Zhi-Li Chen et al.

Summary: Atmospheric ammonia and ammonium have significant impacts on air quality, ecosystems, and climate. The contribution of combustion-related ammonia, which includes fossil fuels and biomass burning, has not been well understood. This study used nitrogen isotopes to differentiate between ammonia from volatilization and combustion, and found that combustion-related ammonia accounted for a considerable proportion of ammonia emissions in East Asia, North America, and Europe.

Is fertilization the dominant source of ammonia in the urban atmosphere?

Mengna Gu et al.

Summary: It was previously believed that ammonia (NH3) has a short residence time in the atmosphere and cannot be transported far from its sources. However, this study found that in urban Beijing, ammonia pollution is primarily from nonagricultural emissions, particularly vehicles, rather than agricultural activities. This finding suggests that nonagricultural sources should be considered when designing a control strategy for reducing haze pollution caused by ammonia in the urban atmosphere.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations, d15N, and sources of NH4 (+) in PM2.5 samples collected from six cities in the North China Plain. The results showed significant variations in the concentrations and delta N-15 of NH4 (+) among the sites, with non-agricultural sources being the main contributors on polluted days.

Exploring use of a commercial passive sampler in a closed static chamber to measure ammonia volatilization

Jaeman Sabrina et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that a significant amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied in rice fields may be lost to the atmosphere through ammonia volatilization, causing environmental issues. This study aims to investigate the use of a commercially available ammonia sampler/absorbent in a static chamber. Results indicate that the amount of absorbed ammonia varies depending on the trapping method.

Relocate 10 billion livestock to reduce harmful nitrogen pollution exposure for 90% of China's population

Zhaohai Bai et al.

Summary: Spatial planning and policy can play a crucial role in reducing human exposure to ammonia pollution in China's livestock sector. By relocating animals according to crop-livestock integration criteria, nitrogen emissions can be significantly reduced, leading to a decrease in the number of people exposed to high ammonia emissions. Therefore, spatial planning serves as a powerful tool in combating nitrogen pollution and minimizing human exposure to ammonia.

Summary: This study aimed to establish fluctuations in concentration over one year by analyzing seasonal and regional variation in ammonia concentration. Livestock and agricultural areas recorded the highest concentration of ammonia among all sites, with the highest concentration recorded in autumn. However, at most of the other studied sites, the highest and lowest ammonia concentrations were recorded during summer and winter, respectively.

Summary: Shifting towards a more meat-intensive diet can lead to increased ammonia emissions and PM2.5 pollution in China, which can have significant indirect health impacts. Transitioning to a less meat-intensive diet can reduce NH3 emissions and PM2.5 pollution, thereby preventing thousands of premature deaths in China related to PM2.5.
