Nitrogen fate during agricultural managed aquifer recharge: Linking plant response, hydrologic, and geochemical processes

Elad Levintal et al.

Summary: Agricultural managed aquifer recharge (Ag-MAR) has been receiving increased attention as a method to intentionally recharge groundwater by flooding farmland with excess surface water. However, concerns about nitrate (NO3-) contamination, greenhouse gas emissions, and crop tolerance to prolonged flooding remain. This study conducted a large-scale experiment to assess the effects of Ag-MAR on soil nitrogen biogeochemical transformations, nitrate leaching, soil conditions, and crop yield. The results showed that nitrate leaching was the dominant nitrogen loss pathway, and prolonged flooding led to a significant decrease in crop yield.

A review on nirS-type and nirK-type denitrifiers via a scientometric approach coupled with case studies

Haishu Sun et al.

Summary: The denitrification process is crucial for improving water quality and serves as a source/sink of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. Two enzymes, Cu-type nitrite reductase (nirK) and cytochrome cd1-type nitrite reductase (nirS), play a key role in the denitrification process. Different environmental factors such as nitrite and nitrate concentrations can influence the abundance and structure of nirS and nirK denitrifying communities, with nirS-type denitrifiers showing more sensitivity to soil type, soil moisture, pH, and rhizosphere effects compared to nirK. High-throughput sequencing has detected Bradyrhizobium as a major genus in both nirS and nirK-type denitrifiers in soil systems. DNA stable isotope probe combined with metagenomic sequencing is needed for new denitrifier detections to clarify the relationships between denitrifying communities and environmental factors.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea possess a wide range of cellular ammonia affinities

Man-Young Jung et al.

Summary: This study characterized the ammonia oxidation kinetic properties of 12 AOA, finding that Nitrosocosmicus species have the lowest affinity for ammonia and total ammonium among all characterized AOA. The substrate affinity of ammonia oxidizers is correlated with their cell surface area to volume ratios, and ammonia-not ammonium-is the substrate for the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme of AOA and comammox, which is similar to AOB.

Nutrient-Limited Enrichments of Nitrifiers From Soil Yield Consortia of Nitrosocosmicus-Affiliated AOA and Nitrospira-Affiliated NOB

Jonathan Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The discovery of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria in terrestrial ecosystems highlights their important role in nitrification. A nutrient-limited enrichment strategy was found to favor the growth of comammox bacteria with high affinity and yield. Direct enrichment from soil and nutrient-limited sub-cultivation consistently yielded high enrichments of Nitrosocosmicus-affiliated AOA associated with multiple canonical nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospira strains.

The Effects of Soil Depth on the Structure of Microbial Communities in Agricultural Soils in Iowa (United States)

Jingjie Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in microbial community abundance, composition, and diversity in soils from corn and soybean fields in Iowa using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The results revealed decreased richness and diversity in microbial communities with increasing soil depth, with Proteobacteria dominating deep agricultural soils. Soil organic matter showed the highest correlation with the exponential decrease in bacterial abundance with depth. Understanding how soil depth influences microbial communities is crucial for guiding sampling approaches in agricultural soils and enhancing soil sustainability for food security.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Ca. Nitrosocosmicus AOA growth increases with incubation temperature in soil, with an optimum of 25 degrees C. Additionally, growth of Ca. Nitrosocosmicus is greater when AOB are inhibited, especially under high NH4+ concentration. This indicates the tolerance of Ca. Nitrosocosmicus to high NH4+ concentration in soils, contradicting the accepted belief that AOA growth is inhibited in soil with high NH4+ concentration, and confirming the role of a near-neutrophilic AOA in nitrification activity in soil with higher nitrogen content.

Influence of Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (AgMAR) and Stratigraphic Heterogeneities on Nitrate Reduction in the Deep Subsurface

Hannah Waterhouse et al.

Summary: The study used a reactive transport model to analyze the impact of Agricultural Managed Aquifer Recharge (AgMAR) on nitrate (NO3-) leaching to groundwater under different management strategies. Simulation results indicated that finer textured sediments are crucial for providing conditions needed for denitrification, while applying water all-at-once may exacerbate groundwater quality issues but also increase denitrification within the vadose zone. The research concludes that AgMAR can be designed to enhance denitrification in the subsurface and reduce NO3- leaching to groundwater.

Depth dependence of climatic controls on soil microbial community activity and composition

A. E. Bernhard et al.

Summary: The study found that as soil depth increases, microbial community composition changes and activity decreases, with the direct impact of climate on microbiome composition and activity relatively lower at depth. Certain microbial taxa show changes in relative abundance only in specific soil horizons in response to large temperature and precipitation gradients, highlighting the depth dependence of climatic controls on microbiome composition. The muted direct impacts of climate at depth suggest that deep soil microbiomes may lag in acclimation to new temperatures with a changing climate.
