Occurrence, human exposure, and risk of microplastics in the indoor environment

Hassan Khalid Ageel et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) have attracted increasing attention due to their ubiquitous presence in the environment, with limited research on human exposure indoors. Studies have shown higher concentrations of MPs in indoor air and dust, raising concerns about potential health risks through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. More research is needed to understand the full extent of human exposure and develop regulations to protect health and the environment.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Dermal uptake of chlorinated organophosphate flame retardants via contact with furniture fabrics; implications for human exposure

Mohamed Abou-Elwafa Abdallah et al.

Summary: The chlorinated organophosphate flame retardants (Cl-PFRs) have been widely used in upholstered furniture despite their carcinogenic potential. This study assessed the dermal absorption of these chemicals from furniture fabrics for the first time, revealing that all three target Cl-PFRs were dermally bioavailable to varying degrees. Factors such as compound properties, exposure matrix, exposure dose, and skin hydration can influence the dermal uptake of Cl-PFRs.

A review on microplastic emission from textile materials and its reduction techniques

Aravin Prince Periyasamy et al.

Summary: The production and consumption of textiles is continuously increasing, causing environmental pollution and health hazards through the release of fiber fragments. These fragments can be ingested by aquatic animals and enter the food chain, posing threats to both the environment and human health.

Microplastics and their Additives in the Indoor Environment

Tunga Salthammer

Summary: Analyses have shown that microplastic pollution in indoor environments could be a significant hygienic problem. Microplastics can be generated from abrasion, added to household products, and found in synthetic materials. There is also a debate on whether particulate emissions from 3D printing should be classified as microplastics or nanoplastics. Textiles are also considered as a potential source of indoor microplastics. It is recommended to further investigate residents' exposure to microplastics and to implement preventive measures.

Dermal uptake: An important pathway of human exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances?

Oddny Ragnarsdottir et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of chemicals produced and used since the 1950s, have been linked to various health effects in humans even at low levels of exposure. Human biomonitoring data shows widespread exposure to PFAS across all age groups. While PFAS have been found in a wide range of products, little is known about dermal uptake as a possible route for human exposure.

Detection of microplastics in human lung tissue using μFTIR spectroscopy

Lauren C. Jenner et al.

Summary: Airborne microplastics (MPs) have been found to have increased concentrations in areas with high human population and activity, especially indoors. This study analyzed human lung tissue samples and identified 39 MPs in 11 out of 13 samples, with an average concentration of 1.42 +/- 1.50 MP/g of tissue. The most abundant polymer types were polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and resin. The study also found that MPs were present in all regions of the lung, with significantly higher levels in the lower region compared to the upper and middle regions. These findings suggest that inhalation is a route of exposure for environmental MPs.

Personal Care and Cosmetic Products as a Potential Source of Environmental Contamination by Microplastics in a Densely Populated Asian City

Saidu M. Bashir et al.

Summary: The study reveals that PCCPs containing microbeads are still widely available for sale in Macao, with polyethylene (PE) being the most common type of microbeads. It estimates that over 37 billion microbeads per year may be released into the environment through wastewater treatment plants. The density of microplastics in coastal sediments varies and the fraction of < 1 mm particles is the most abundant, making up an average of 98.6% of the total.
