Ambient air pollution and gestational diabetes mellitus: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Weiqi Liang et al.

Summary: By conducting a comprehensive review of epidemiological studies, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the composition of particulate matter (PM) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Our meta-analysis of 31 cohort studies showed that exposure to PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and NO2 was significantly associated with an increased risk of GDM, particularly during preconception and the first trimester. Specifically, black carbon (BC) exposure in the second trimester and nitrate (NO3-) exposure in the first trimester were found to elevate the risk of GDM.

Maternal exposure to air pollution alters energy balance transiently according to gender and changes gut microbiota

Olivia Pizetta Zordao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of maternal exposure to PM2.5 during different stages on offspring energy metabolism and gut microbiota composition. The results showed that gestational exposure to PM2.5 had a more significant impact on male offspring, leading to increased body weight and metabolic abnormalities. In female offspring, both gestational and lactational exposure to PM2.5 resulted in elevated body weight and altered energy metabolism. Additionally, gestational exposure to PM2.5 was associated with decreased gut microbiota diversity in both genders.

A systematic review of evidence for maternal preconception exposure to outdoor air pollution on Children's health

Natalie Blanc et al.

Summary: The preconception period is a critical window for gametogenesis, and exposure to air pollutants during this period can have long-term effects on children's health outcomes. A systematic review of epidemiological evidence found that outdoor air pollution during the maternal preconception period was associated with various health outcomes, with birth defects showing the most consistent findings. Future studies should improve exposure assessment methods and integrate pathophysiologic biomarkers to enhance the understanding of the causal relationship between preconception exposure and health outcomes.

Prenatal exposure to air pollution and the risk of macrosomia: Identifying windows of susceptibility

Li Shang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of prenatal exposure to air pollution on the risk of macrosomia and identifies the susceptible windows. The results suggest that PM2.5 and NO2 exposure during late pregnancy significantly increase the risk of macrosomia, while O-3 exposure during early and middle pregnancy is associated with elevated risk. Weekly exposure to PM10, however, does not show any significant association with macrosomia risk.

Summary: This study found that prenatal exposure to PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 air pollutants significantly increases the risk of macrosomia, especially in coastal cities. Further research in multiple coastal cities is needed to validate these findings.

Summary: This study found that exposure to PM2.5 waves may increase the risk of adverse birth outcomes, especially during early pregnancy. The intensity of the risk is associated with factors such as the concentration of PM2.5 and the duration of exposure.

Interaction of PM2.5 and pre-pregnancy body mass index on birth weight: A nationwide prospective cohort study

Hanze Du et al.

Summary: This study found that gestational exposure to PM2.5 and pre-pregnancy BMI are independently associated with increased birthweight, with a negative interaction observed between pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational PM2.5 in terms of birthweight gain. Avoiding high-dose exposure to PM2.5 during early and middle stages of pregnancy, as well as pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity, may help prevent high birthweight.

Summary: The study found that prenatal exposure to air pollution may have adverse effects on term birth weight, with effects varying depending on trimesters and pollutants. This provides further evidence for the adverse effects of air pollution exposure on term birth weight in heavily polluted areas.
