Stringent response ensures the timely adaptation of bacterial growth to nutrient downshift

Manlu Zhu et al.

Summary: Bacteria need to metabolically adapt to nutrient fluctuations during repeated feast and famine cycles. In this study, the stringent response of (p)ppGpp was found to be crucial for the timely adaption of bacterial growth to both amino acid and carbon downshift. The relA deficient strain exhibited longer growth lag and delayed proteome re-allocation, leading to compromised transcription and expression of catabolic operons during nutrient downshift.

Understanding the relationship between nutrient availability and freshwater cyanobacterial growth and abundance

Michele A. Burford et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic eutrophication is a well-established cause of cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater. Early studies focused on phosphorus (P) as the key limiting nutrient, but recent studies suggest that the importance of nitrogen (N) may have been overstated. Cyanobacteria can adapt to low and variable nutrient conditions through various strategies.

The phyto-bacterioplankton couple in a shallow freshwater ecosystem: Who leads the dance?

Imen Louati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between bacterioplankton composition and phytoplankton dynamics in a shallow lake known for recurrent cyanobacterial blooms. Changes in bacterial community occurred before the development of the phytoplankton bloom, suggesting that the environmental changes were first sensed by the bacterial community. The study also highlighted the relevance of spatial organization within different microenvironments in shaping these communities.

Competitive superiority of N-fixing cyanobacteria when fixed N is scarce: Reconsiderations based on a model with heterocyst differentiation

James P. Grover et al.

Summary: Some cyanobacteria dominate when the supply of dissolved nitrogen is low, but the availability of phosphorus is high. A mathematical model was used to show that cyanobacteria can coexist with non-fixing algal competitors at intermediate nitrogen-phosphorus supply ratios. However, when the abiotic loss rates are too high, cyanobacteria are competitively excluded. The presence of herbivores also affects the competitive dynamics, with algae dominating at the highest and lowest nitrogen-phosphorus supply ratios, and cyanobacteria dominating at intermediate ratios. The study also highlights the importance of planktonic community processes in determining nitrogen supply in aquatic environments.

Temporal and functional interrelationships between bacterioplankton communities and the development of a toxigenic Microcystis bloom in a lowland European reservoir

Joanna Mankiewicz-Boczek et al.

Summary: The microbiome associated with cyanobacteria is influenced by bloom development, but the nature of the relationships between Microcystis and its microbiome is still unclear. This study investigated the temporal changes in bacterioplankton communities and their functional potential during different stages of a Microcystis bloom. The results showed that particle-attached bacteria were influenced by physico-chemical parameters, while free-living bacteria had more complex inter-relationships. Microcystis negatively influenced bacterioplankton assemblages and reduced their diversity and evenness.

Sustained stoichiometric imbalance and its ecological consequences in a large oligotrophic lake

James J. Elser et al.

Summary: This study examines the nutrient dynamics in Flathead Lake over a period of 38 years. Despite low nutrient levels, the lake maintained high nitrogen to phosphorus ratios. This stoichiometric imbalance led to phosphorus limitation in phytoplankton growth and affected the nutrient cycling in the entire ecosystem.

Individual-based modelling of cyanobacteria blooms: Physical and physiological processes

Mohammad Hassan Ranjbar et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are increasingly impacting lakes and reservoirs worldwide. Individual-based models (IBMs) can help simulate the complex ecological processes, but there are challenges and research gaps to address, such as incorporating vertical movement and physiological processes of cyanobacteria growth, studying the effects and feedbacks of CyanoHABs on the environment, exploring competition among cyanobacteria species for nutrients and light, using high-resolution data for calibration and verification targets, and understanding the impact of climate change on the frequency, intensity, and duration of CyanoHABs.

Summary: The study aimed to predict alert levels of algal blooms using machine learning models and address data imbalance by generating synthetic data. Results showed that the combined use of original and synthetic data improved prediction performance of the models, particularly for critical alert levels. The application of synthetic data significantly enhanced detection performance of the machine learning models in predicting algal bloom alert levels.
