Degradation of cyanobacterial neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) using ozone process: influencing factors and mechanism

Boyin Yan et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effectiveness of BMAA degradation by ozone and found that in pure water, the removal rate of BMAA was almost 100%, but it was lower in actual water. BMAA was primarily degraded by direct oxidation of ozone molecules under acidic and near-neutral conditions, while indirect oxidation of hydroxyl radicals accounted for the main part under strong alkaline conditions. The pH value had a significant effect on the degradation of BMAA, with the fastest degradation rate at near-neutral pH. By-products were generated during the degradation process, and three by-products were identified. The degradation pathways of BMAA were proposed to be attributed to the fracture of C-N bonds.

Drivers of Disinfection Byproduct Cytotoxicity in US Drinking Water: Should Other DBPs Be Considered for Regulation?

Joshua M. Allen et al.

Summary: This study identifies key drivers of toxicity in drinking water in the United States, focusing on disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The research highlights the importance of unregulated haloacetonitriles and iodoacetic acids as significant toxicity drivers, especially in waters impacted by seawater. The findings suggest that future research should prioritize these DBPs for potential regulation.

Ozonation of organic compounds in water and wastewater: A critical review

Sungeun Lim et al.

Summary: Ozonation has a long history in water treatment and has been used for disinfection and oxidation of pollutants. In recent years, it has been increasingly applied for enhanced municipal wastewater treatment and water reuse. The research on ozonation has contributed to a better understanding of the removal efficiency of organic contaminants and the formation of transformation products.

Degradation of β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) by UV/peracetic acid system: Influencing factors, degradation mechanism and DBP formation

Shiqing Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation of beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in a UV/peracetic acid (UV/PAA) system was investigated. The study found that the synergistic effect of UV and PAA was effective in degrading BMAA, and the presence of water matrices and chloride ion inhibited the degradation process.

Summary: The study reviewed the application of catalytic ozonation processes in drinking water treatment for the removal of humic substances and disinfection byproducts. Besides presenting a brief history of disinfectant use and alternative oxidants, it focused on conventional AOPs recommended for treating disinfection byproducts, along with discussing the research achievements on the application of catalytic ozonation processes.
