Demystifying mercury geochemistry in contaminated soil-groundwater systems with complementary mercury stable isotope, concentration, and speciation analyses

D. S. McLagan et al.

Summary: Interpretation of Hg geochemistry can be challenging due to the complexity of Hg transformation processes. In this study, we demonstrate the improved interpretation of Hg geochemistry by combining Hg stable isotope analyses with established methods. This approach allows us to identify specific Hg transformation processes and trace their behavior in environmental systems.

Dissociation of Mercuric Oxides Drives Anomalous Isotope Fractionation during Net Photo-oxidation of Mercury Vapor in Air

Guangyi Sun et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of mass-independent fractionation of even-mass mercury isotopes in the atmosphere suggests that UVC-induced photodissociation of mercuric oxides may be responsible for this phenomenon. This finding has significant implications for understanding mercury biogeochemistry.

Redox Potentials of Magnetite Suspensions under Reducing Conditions

Thomas C. Robinson et al.

Summary: Predicting the redox behavior of magnetite in reducing soils and sediments is challenging due to inconsistent measured potentials and the lack of consensus on relevant Fe(III) | Fe(II) equilibria. In this study, we measured open-circuit potentials of stoichiometric magnetite equilibrated under various solution conditions and found Nernstian behavior in certain conditions. Our findings suggest that the maghemite/Fe(II)aq couple accurately predicts the redox behavior of stoichiometric magnetite suspensions in the presence of aqueous Fe(II) between pH values of 6.5 and 8.5. Additionally, a distinct shift in potentials was observed at higher pH values and without added Fe(II), indicating a change in the dominant Fe(III)|Fe(II) couple(s) poising the potential.

Chromium isotope fractionation during reduction of Chromium(VI) by Iron(II/III)-bearing clay minerals

Claresta Joe-Wong et al.

Summary: Chromium stable isotope ratios can be used to trace the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in both ancient and modern systems. The study found that the fractionation factors during Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II/III)-bearing clay minerals can be predicted from the standard reduction potential or Fe(II)/Fe(total) of the clay, potentially improving the ability to model Cr isotope signatures in geochemical systems. This linear free energy relationship may provide a model for determining other redox-driven kinetic isotope effects in environmentally important isotope systems.

Mercury Reduction by Nanoparticulate Vivianite

Marjorie Etique et al.

Summary: The study investigates the chemical synthesis and Hg-II reduction ability of nanoparticulate vivianite, finding that vivianite has a similar reduction ability to other effective Hg-II reducing minerals. It suggests that vivianite may play a role in Hg removal and MeHg formation limitation in environments rich in Fe and organic matter.

Stable Isotope Fractionation Reveals Similar Atomic-Level Controls during Aerobic and Anaerobic Microbial Hg Transformation Pathways

Daniel S. Gregoire et al.

Summary: Mercury (Hg) reduction during anoxygenic photosynthesis and fermentation in the model anaerobe Heliobacterium modesticaldum Ice1 was explored using Hg stable isotope fractionation. The study found that cells preferentially reduce lighter Hg isotopes in both metabolisms, leading to mass-dependent fractionation, but mass-independent fractionation induced by UV-visible light was absent. Factors affecting Hg recruitment, accessibility, and availability pathways alongside metabolic redox reactions were shown to influence fractionation during these processes. The study suggests that similar controls likely underpin diverse microbe-mediated Hg transformations affecting Hg's fate in oxic and anoxic habitats.

Mass-Independent Fractionation of Even and Odd Mercury Isotopes during Atmospheric Mercury Redox Reactions

Xuewu Fu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that oxidized Hg at high altitudes exhibits even isotopic fractionation characteristics, while rainfall Hg shows both even and odd isotopic fractionation, possibly due to photo-reduction of Hg-II in clouds. Observations of MIF in free tropospheric Hg-0 indicate that oxidation of Hg-0 in high-altitude air masses produces opposite even- and odd-MIF in Hg-0 and oxidized Hg-II.

Chemistry and Isotope Fractionation of Divalent Mercury during Aqueous Reduction Mediated by Selected Oxygenated Organic Ligands

Huifang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the reduction of Hg-II by oxalic acid, p-quinone, quinol, and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), with AQDS and oxalic acid showing the highest rate of reaction under UVB photolysis. Only the oxalate ion in oxalic acid was found to be photoactive, leading to distinguishable isotope anomalies. The reduction mediated by AQDS resulted in a large odd-MIF, indicating an enrichment of odd isotopes in the reactant.
