Lanpepsy is a novel lanthanide-binding protein involved in the lanthanide response of the obligate methylotroph Methylobacillus flagellatus

Jethro L. Hemmann et al.

Summary: Lanthanides are required in certain methanol dehydrogenases, and the study of proteins involved in lanthanide sensing and utilization has become a popular field of research. This study focused on the lanthanome of Methyl-obacillus flagellatus and identified a novel lanthanide-binding protein called LanP. Bioinformatic analysis and experimental assays confirmed the presence of multiple lanthanide binding sites in LanP, highlighting its potential role in lanthanide utilization. This discovery has implications for the purification and separation of rare-earth elements.

Minor Actinides Can Replace Essential Lanthanides in Bacterial Life

Helena Singer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ability of actinides, the radioactive 5f elements, to replace the essential 4f elements in lanthanide-dependent bacterial metabolism. The results show that americium and curium can support growth in the absence of lanthanides, and that methylotrophic bacteria prefer actinides over late lanthanides when presented with a mixture of equal amounts of lanthanides together with americium and curium. This study establishes that methylotrophic bacteria can utilize actinides instead of lanthanides to sustain their one-carbon metabolism if they possess the correct size and a +III oxidation state.

Enhanced rare-earth separation with a metal-sensitive lanmodulin dimer

Joseph A. Mattocks et al.

Summary: This study investigates the separation of rare-earth elements by utilizing the lanmodulin protein from Hansschlegelia quercus. Through structural changes, the binding affinity between lanthanum(III)-induced dimer and dysprosium(III)-induced dimer can differ by over 100-fold. Furthermore, the mutagenesis of a key residue at the dimer interface enables the column-based separation of a neodymium(III)/dysprosium(III) mixture with purities over 98%.

Pu distribution among mixed waste components at the Hanford legacy site, USA and implications to long-term migration

Teresa Baumer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the migration behavior of plutonium (Pu) under different conditions and waste compositions. The results show that Pu can migrate as a Pu-TBP-nitrate complex in the presence of low pH and high nitrate concentrations, but can partition into the aqueous phase and sorb to sediments under reduced nitrate concentrations or increased pH. The findings suggest that the migration of Pu in the subsurface is influenced by both weak sorption under low pH conditions and the formation of Pu-TBP-nitrate complexes in the organic phase.

Reduction of U(VI) on Chemically Reduced Montmorillonite and Surface Complexation Modeling of Adsorbed U(IV)

Anshuman Satpathy et al.

Summary: Adsorption and reduction of U(VI) on Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals can control uranium mobility in subsurface environments. The reduction of U(VI) was nearly complete at low sodium concentrations and both pH 3 and 6. At pH 6 and high sodium concentrations, U(VI) reduction was only 70%. Surface-bound U(VI) on unreduced montmorillonite was more easily extracted into solution with bicarbonate than surface-bound U(IV) generated by reduction. A nonelectrostatic surface complexation model was developed to interpret the equilibrium adsorption of U(IV) on Fe(II)-bearing montmorillonite as a function of pH and sodium concentration.
