First Insight into the Formation of In Vivo Transformation Products of 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate in Zebrafish and Prediction of Their Potential Toxicities

Rongyan Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the in vivo transformation products of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP) in exposed zebrafish were analyzed, and 15 metabolites were identified, including both phase I and phase II products. The primary metabolite was 5-OH-EHDPHP. The study also reported new sulfation products and a terminal desaturation metabolite of EHDPHP. In vitro tests showed that EHDPHP transformation occurred not only in the liver but also in the intestine, with gut microbes playing an important role. The toxicity of several metabolites was predicted to be higher than that of EHDPHP.

Insights into the Atmospheric Persistence, Transformation, and Health Implications of Organophosphate Esters in Urban Ambient Air

Jia-Yong Lao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation and health risks of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the atmosphere. The results showed that alkyl-OPE transformation products were present in urban ambient air, while transformation products of chlorinated and aryl-OPEs were not detected. The study highlighted the significant impact of particle size on the atmospheric persistence of OPEs and recommended considering both parental compounds and transformation products in health risk assessments.

A systematic study of microplastic occurrence in urban water networks of a metropolis

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: Microplastics were found in all sewage and stormwater samples collected in Hong Kong, with higher abundance in sewage and lower abundance in stormwater. The dominant characteristics of microplastics were small size and fiber shape. The study highlights the significant contribution of sewage treatment works to the coastal microplastic pollution.

Spatiotemporal occurrence of phthalate esters in stormwater drains of Hong Kong, China: Mass loading and source identification

Yaru Cao et al.

Summary: Urban stormwater is an important pathway for transporting anthropogenic pollutants to water bodies, including phthalate esters (PAEs), which are common endocrine disruptors. This study investigated the presence of 15 PAEs in stormwater from six major stormwater drains in Hong Kong. The results showed that PAEs were ubiquitous in stormwater, with spatial and seasonal variations. Domestic and industrial sources were identified as significant contributors to PAE pollution.

Occurrence and removal of organophosphate esters in municipal wastewater treatment plants in Thessaloniki, Greece

Ioanna Pantelaki et al.

Summary: An integrated study was conducted on the occurrence and fate of eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Thessaloniki, Greece. The study found that biodegradation and sorption onto sludge were the main removal mechanisms for OPEs. The emissions of OPEs through effluents and sludge did not pose considerable risk to the aquatic and terrestrial environment.

Organophosphate esters cause thyroid dysfunction via multiple signaling pathways in zebrafish brain

Zhenfei Yan et al.

Summary: Research found that organophosphate esters can competitively enter the brain to inhibit the growth of zebrafish, mainly through affecting the transport and synthesis of thyroid hormones, resulting in inhibited cell proliferation and impacting several signaling pathways related to thyroid endocrine functions.

Bone developmental toxicity of organophosphorus flame retardants TDCIPP and TPhP in marine medaka Oryzias melastigma

Haizheng Hong et al.

Summary: The study showed that TDCIPP and TPhP have developmental toxicity in marine organisms, leading to shortened body length, fin deformities, and spinal curvature in Oryzias melastigma, posing potential risks to marine fish and ecosystems. Additionally, although both chemicals caused similar bone toxicity, they had different effects on the expression of bone developmental genes such as bmp4, bmp2, and runx2.

Organophosphate (OP) diesters and a review of sources, chemical properties, environmental occurrence, adverse effects, and future directions

Yaxin Liu et al.

Summary: The demand for organophosphate esters (OPEs) has increased in the global flame retardant market due to the phase-out of toxic halogenated flame retardants. OP diesters, as degradation products of OP triesters, have been identified as potential risks to biota and humans in the environment. Scientific literature has shown the wide occurrence of OP diesters in various environmental matrices and the adverse effects on exposed organisms, leading to the need for further research in this field.

Aerobic degradation of nonhalogenated organophosphate flame esters (OPEs) by enriched cultures from sludge: Kinetics, pathways, bacterial community evolution, and toxicity evaluation

Rui Hou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to monitor the biodegradation of nonhalogenated organophosphate esters in wastewater treatment plants and clarify the microbial-mediated mechanisms. The presence of glucose significantly enhanced the degradation of OPEs, and the removal ratios for the three OPEs reached 29.3-89.9% after 5 cycles of cultivation.

Seasonal concentration variation and potential influencing factors of organophosphorus flame retardants in a wastewater treatment plant

Shenghong Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations of Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in water and sludge phases of influent and effluent in a sewage treatment plant in Beijing, China over five seasons. It was found that the alkyl OPFRs decreased significantly in the water phase from influent to effluent. The properties (log Kow and log Koc) of OPFRs were identified as key factors influencing the amounts of OPFRs in sludge phase.
