Ocean Acidification Effect on the Iron-Gallic Acid Redox Interaction in Seawater

Norma Perez-Almeida et al.

Summary: Ocean acidification has a direct impact on the biogeochemistry of iron by affecting its redox and complexation reactions. Polyphenols exuded by marine microorganisms can modify the oxidation and reduction rates of iron by complexing Fe(III). Gallic acid, a polyphenol, reduces Fe(III) to Fe(II) in seawater and its effectiveness depends on pH and solution composition.

Dark Iron-Catalyzed Reactions in Acidic and Viscous Aerosol Systems Efficiently Form Secondary Brown Carbon

Hind A. Al-Abadleh et al.

Summary: Iron-driven secondary brown carbon formation reactions from water-soluble organics in cloud droplets and aerosols create insoluble and soluble products of emerging atmospheric importance. This study demonstrates that under conditions of high ionic strength and acidic pH, insoluble black polycatechol particles and colored water-soluble oligomers can be formed. By controlling reaction conditions and adding specific components, the rate of brown carbon formation and product formation can be modulated.

Effect of common inorganic anions on iron-catalyzed secondary brown carbon formation from guaiacol

Jingyi Ling et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of pH, inorganic anions, and ionic strength on the formation of brown carbon (BrC) in aerosols. The results show that these factors strongly influence BrC formation by affecting the oxidation activity and complexation capability of different Fe(III) species. Among all Fe(III) species, FeOH2+ is identified as the most reactive in the formation of BrC. Additionally, the aggregation process of BrC is affected by different anions, with SO42- exhibiting the highest efficiency in inducing aggregation.

Aqueous production of secondary organic aerosol from fossil-fuel emissions in winter Beijing haze

Junfeng Wang et al.

Summary: Field observations during a winter haze event in Beijing reveal fast aqueous-phase conversion of fossil-fuel primary organic aerosol (POA) to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) at high relative humidity. It is suggested that ring-breaking oxidation of POA aromatic species may be the dominant mechanism for SOA formation. This POA origin for SOA could explain why SOA has been decreasing despite flat emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over the years 2013-2018.

Photolytic radical persistence due to anoxia in viscous aerosol particles

Peter A. Alpert et al.

Summary: Research shows that sunlight can induce stable reactive oxygen species and carbon-centered radicals in organic aerosol particles containing iron. Laboratory experiments demonstrate radical formation, release, as well as iron oxidation and mass loss in photoactive organic particles. The study suggests that fast radical reaction and slow diffusion near viscous organic particle surfaces can lead to oxygen depletion, radical trapping, and humidity-dependent oxidation.
