Dispersive Fluxes Within and Over a Real Urban Canopy: A Large-Eddy Simulation Study

Emmanuel Akinlabi et al.

Summary: Large-eddy simulations are used to study the transport of momentum and passive scalar within and over a real urban canopy in Boston, USA. The study finds that dispersive momentum and scalar fluxes beyond 2-5 times the mean building height can be important, contributing about 10-15% to the sum of turbulent and dispersive fluxes. The dispersive fluxes do not decrease monotonically with height and are sensitive to time and spatial averaging.

Analytical and numerical study on transient urban street air warming induced by anthropogenic heat emission

Shuo-Jun Mei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transient street air warming process caused by anthropogenic heat using an analytical model and Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), showing that the introduction of buoyancy effect in the model leads to more accurate results. Buoyancy plays a significant role in influencing exchange velocity and urban canopy flow structure.

Strong influence of convective heat transfer efficiency on the cooling benefits of green roof irrigation

Linying Wang et al.

Summary: Green roofs provide cooling benefits for the urban environment by enhancing evapotranspiration, which depends on soil moisture conditions requiring irrigation. The magnitude and spatial variability of cooling benefits are mainly controlled by irrigation amount and a surface energy redistribution factor. Convective heat transfer efficiency plays an important role in determining the amount of irrigation needed for decreasing green roof surface temperature, highlighting the importance of surface energy balance in constraining the cooling benefits of green roof irrigation.
