Association of Preterm Birth and Exposure to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

Anish S. Kolan et al.

Summary: Several studies have shown that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can have harmful effects on various systems of the human body. This review summarizes the investigations into the impact of EDC exposure on reproductive systems, specifically preterm birth (PTB), and the efforts of international organizations to reduce the harmful effects of EDC exposure. The studies examined the association between EDCs and PTB, and although the findings differed, they collectively provide sufficient evidence of a possible link between EDC exposure and the risk of PTB. Therefore, international organizations such as the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and World Health Organization (WHO) should continue to regulate EDC exposure globally and monitor levels among individuals of reproductive age.

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Their Effects in Pet Dogs and Cats: An Overview

Paola Pocar et al.

Summary: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are environmental pollutants that can interfere with hormones in the body, and their effects on pet health are a growing concern. Dogs and cats can be exposed to EDCs through ingestion, inhalation, and absorption, with diet being the main source. These exposures have been linked to health disorders in pets, including thyroid and reproductive disorders, diabetes, heart and kidney diseases, and cancer. Pets can serve as unintentional sentinels for human exposure to EDCs, and their health is important for both humans and animals. This review emphasizes the need for an integrated approach to assess the impact of EDCs on human and animal health.

Gene-Gene Interactions Reduce Aminoglycoside Susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa through Efflux Pump-Dependent and -Independent Mechanisms

Aswin Thacharodi et al.

Summary: This research aimed to understand the genetic basis of aminoglycoside resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The study identified mutations in resistance-associated genes in clinical isolates, with fusA1 mutation having the biggest impact on reducing aminoglycoside susceptibility. Mutations in amgS and mexZ also influenced resistance, and all mutations increased the expression of the mexXY efflux pump. The findings demonstrate the complex interplay between mutations, efflux pump expression, and other mechanisms in reducing P. aeruginosa's susceptibility to aminoglycosides.

Summary: Neonatal administration of diethylstilbestrol (DES) to mice causes long-lasting up-regulation of inflammatory Cxcl chemokines in the vaginal epithelium. This study also reveals DES-induced non-coding RNAs that may be responsible for the activation of Cxcl chemokines. The findings suggest that DES-mediated inflammation is associated with the carcinogenic process.

Bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: An updated microbiological review

Aswin Thacharodi et al.

Summary: PAHs, a class of organic priority pollutants, pose significant public health and environmental concerns due to their carcinogenic, genotoxic, mutagenic, and cytotoxic properties. With increased awareness of their negative effects on the environment and human health, research on eliminating PAHs from the environment has exponentially increased. Various environmental factors, such as nutrients, microorganisms present and their abundance, and the nature and chemical properties of PAHs, affect the biodegradation of PAHs. While bacteria and fungi have garnered the most attention for their biodegradation capacity, a comprehensive understanding of microbial communities and their enzymatic and biochemical properties is crucial for successful PAH degradation. This review aims to comprehensively discuss the latest findings and advancements in the microbial bioremediation of PAHs to enhance the broader understanding of PAHs bioremediation in the environment.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in environmental matrices: Occurrence, fate, health impact, physio-chemical and bioremediation technology

Aris Ismanto et al.

Summary: Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have adverse impacts on human and environmental well-being, being associated with diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular risk, behavioral disorders, autoimmune defects, and reproductive diseases. Conventional treatment methods are insufficient to fully remove EDCs from water, necessitating the use of advanced psychochemical and biological treatments. The lack of laws regarding acute concentration limits of EDCs in various water sources contributes to the intensified concerns about these mixed contaminants. Further data is needed to address the risks associated with the presence of EDCs in the environment.

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge of the impacts of EDCs on reproductive success in wildlife and humans, with a focus on retrospective assessment and laboratory-based experiments. The evidence suggests that anthropogenic chemicals negatively impact reproduction by altering endocrine system function, particularly in aquatic species. Similar effects are observed in mammalian wildlife and humans in epidemiological studies. Further research is needed on the implications of chemical exposures during development and the potential for long-term reproductive effects. Field-based observations and long-term population level studies are key to addressing knowledge gaps.
