The recalcitrance and potential toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons within crude oil residues in beach sediments at the BIOS site, nearly forty years later

Blake E. Hunnie et al.

Summary: The Arctic presents unique challenges for oil spill research due to extreme conditions. The Baffin Island Oil Spill (BIOS) project revisited sites nearly 40 years later to gather long-term monitoring data. The samples collected showed potentially toxic levels of PAHs, indicating the continued hazard posed by the weathered crude oil residues.

An experimental oil spill at a tidal freshwater wetland along the St. Lawrence River re-visited after 21 years

Lars Schreiber et al.

Summary: This study investigates the residual oil and habitat recovery in the Ste. Croix wetland in Eastern Canada after an experimental oil spill in 1999. The results show that after 21 years, the sediments in the test plots, regardless of the countermeasures taken, can be considered completely recovered.

High-resolution shotgun metagenomics: the more data, the better?

Julien Tremblay et al.

Summary: In this study, real data was used to conduct detailed benchmarking of shallow shotgun metagenomics. The results show that shallow sequencing has the potential to obtain reliable results regarding microbial community structures, and high-depth sequencing does not provide additional ecological interpretation. However, ultra-deep sequencing and maximizing the usage of all data can be beneficial for generating metagenome-assembled genomes.
