Potential of direct granulation and organic loading rate tolerance of aerobic granular sludge in ultra-hypersaline environment

Jingxue Yue et al.

Summary: Salt-tolerant aerobic granular sludge (SAGS) technology has the potential to treat ultra-hypersaline high-strength organic wastewater. This study used a one-step development strategy to directly cultivate SAGS under 9% salinity, achieving the fastest cultivation process compared to previous studies. The transition process was mainly driven by the fungus Fusarium, with RRNPP and AHL-mediated systems as the main regulation systems of bacteria. SAGS exhibited high removal efficiencies of TOC and NH4+-N under ultra-hypersaline conditions, and Halomonas dominated the SAGS.

Rapid formation of aerobic granular sludge by bioaugmentation technology: A review

Xushen Han et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the main strategies for accelerating the formation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and focuses on the bioaugmentation technology. The bioaugmentation technology is divided into two categories: flocculating bacteria and filamentous fungus, which includes pure fungal pellets and pellet-bacteria system. The review also discusses the adsorption of various microorganisms by pure-culture fungal pellets in long-term operation. A comparison analysis of different bioaugmentation technologies for rapid AGS cultivation is provided, along with prospects for future research.

Storage and reactivation of aerobic granular sludge: A review

Karn Tanavarotai et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the storage and reactivation methods of AGS technology, discussing different granule storage techniques and their advantages and disadvantages, highlighting the high potential of storing AGS in dried form for recovery after reactivation. This method not only successfully shortens the start-up period of AGS technology, but may also lead to the development of an AGS stocking business.

Soil microbial diversity-biomass relationships are driven by soil carbon content across global biomes

Felipe Bastida et al.

Summary: Based on a global field survey, it was found that soil carbon content is closely associated with the relationship and ratio between microbial diversity and biomass in soils across different ecosystems and climate types. Particularly, the ratio of soil microbial diversity to biomass is higher in arid environments and lower in C-rich cold environments. The study indicates that reductions in soil carbon content due to land use intensification and climate change could lead to significant shifts in the microbial diversity-biomass ratio, impacting various soil processes.
