Acute effects of three surface-modified nanoplastics against Microcystis aeruginosa: Growth, microcystin production, and mechanisms

Xiaowei Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different surface-modified nanoparticles on the growth and microcystin production of Microcystis aeruginosa. The results showed that all three types of nanoparticles inhibited the growth of M. aeruginosa, with different surface modifications having different levels of impact. Additionally, exposure to nanoparticles significantly increased microcystin production and release. The study identified physical constraints, obstructed photosynthetic activity, and oxidative damage as potential mechanisms for the observed effects.

Effective Early Treatment of Microcystis Exponential Growth and Microcystin Production with Hydrogen Peroxide and Hydroxyapatite

Ian Struewing et al.

Summary: Mitigating cyanotoxin production is crucial for aquatic ecosystems and public health. A pilot study developed an effective harmful cyanobacterial bloom (HCB) prediction approach using qPCR to detect the toxin-encoding gene mcyA. Early treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or hydroxyapatite (HAP) effectively controlled Microcystis aeruginosa growth and MC production, with HAP showing a greater reduction in mcyA gene abundance.

Potential influence of overwintering benthic algae on water quality

Lefan Yao et al.

Summary: The overwintering benthic algae have direct impacts on drinking water safety and influence the recruitment of algae in warm seasons. Understanding the characteristics of overwintering benthic algae is crucial for formulating effective strategies to prevent water resource contamination. This study found that picophytobenthos accounted for a large portion of benthic algae biomass in winter, and the species composition of overwintering benthic algae was similar to planktonic algae in warm seasons. Micronutrients, such as iron and manganese, played a key role in influencing the biomass of benthic algae in oligotrophic or mesotrophic water bodies. Additionally, the study highlighted the importance of monitoring harmful secondary metabolites released by pico-phytobenthos in sediment, as they have the potential to impact water quality.

Summary: The simplest beta-diketone, acetylacetone, is found to be a promising specific cyanocide, targeting bound iron species in the photosynthetic electron transport chain of Microcystis aeruginosa. This targeted binding approach outperforms the general oxidation mechanism in terms of specificity and eco-safety, providing a unique solution for the selective control of cyanobacteria.

Changing climate and land use of 21st century influences soil erosion in India

Subodh Chandra Pal et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the spatial extent and distribution of soil erosion caused by land cover and climate change. By providing a detailed soil erosion map, the study reveals the importance of climate and land cover change in controlling soil erosion, as well as the impact of human activities across the country. The projected soil loss estimation indicates that unless human activities and climate change are controlled, a significant percentage of land surface will erode top soil at a high rate by the year 2100.

Novel disinfection method for toxic cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria tenuis) and simultaneous removal of cyanotoxins aided by recyclable magnetic nanoparticles

Qian Gao et al.

Summary: An optimized disinfection method using recyclable magnetic nanoparticles with metal ions has been introduced to combat cyanobacteria contamination in freshwater. The combined use of Ag+ and Cu2+ proved to be more efficient in disinfection compared to individual ions, however, it may stimulate the production of cyanotoxins. The study also showed high recovery efficiency of valuable metal ions and sustainability of the disinfection method with minimal environmental impact.
