Cryptophytes: An emerging algal group in the rapidly changing Antarctic Peninsula marine environments

Carlos Rafael Borges Mendes et al.

Summary: Based on a 11-year in-situ dataset, researchers found that cryptophytes are gradually replacing diatoms as the basis of the food web in the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Their study demonstrates a strong coupling between cryptophyte biomass accumulation, summer upper ocean stability, and mixed layer depth. These findings shed light on the importance of niche separation between diatoms and cryptophytes in understanding the WAP marine ecosystem.

Drivers of Marine CO2-Carbonate Chemistry in the Northern Antarctic Peninsula

Mauricio Santos-Andrade et al.

Summary: This study assessed long-term changes in carbonate chemistry in the Bransfield Strait and found that the hydrographic setting drives temporal variability of carbonate parameters. The western basin has experienced decreases in pH and O-ar over the last three decades. The central basin was characterized by a high contribution of Dense Shelf Water with high carbon dioxide content.

OC4-SO: A New Chlorophyll-a Algorithm for the Western Antarctic Peninsula Using Multi-Sensor Satellite Data

Afonso Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of global and regional satellite algorithms in the Western Antarctic Peninsula and investigates the factors contributing to Chl-a underestimation. The results show that the global algorithm underestimates in-situ Chl-a by an average of ~59%, with higher underestimation in waters with greater Chl-a concentrations. No clear link was found between Chl-a underestimation and pigment packaging effect, phytoplankton community composition, or sea ice contamination. A new satellite Chl-a algorithm, OC4-SO, is proposed based on multi-sensor satellite data and the most comprehensive in-situ dataset collected from the Western Antarctic Peninsula.

Glacial meltwater input to the ocean around the Antarctic Peninsula: forcings and consequences

Luciana S. Lima et al.

Summary: This article reviews the impact of glacial freshwater input on the adjacent ocean of the Antarctic Peninsula. Glacier melting leads to the intrusion of colder and lighter water into the ocean, increasing water column stratification, influencing sea-ice growth, and reducing ocean-atmosphere exchanges, thus affecting the global water cycle.

Chemotaxonomic characterization of the key genera of diatoms in the Northern Antarctic Peninsula

Raul Rodrigo Costa et al.

Summary: Diatoms are important in the Southern Ocean ecosystems and their responses under climate change scenario need to be understood in detail. The study shows a coupling between key diatom genera and the corresponding chemotaxonomic subgroup types, providing insights into their distribution and ecology along the impacted Antarctic coastal regions.

Microplanktonic diatom assemblages dominated the primary production but not the biomass in an Antarctic fjord

Martina Mascioni et al.

Summary: Research in the western Antarctic Peninsula found that fjords in the area are highly productive, with microplanktonic diatoms being the main organic carbon producers. The composition and productivity of phytoplankton communities varied across different seasons and locations within the study area.

Large diatom bloom off the Antarctic Peninsula during cool conditions associated with the 2015/2016 El Nino

Raul Rodrigo Costa et al.

Summary: A large diatom bloom was observed off the Northern Antarctic Peninsula in 2015/2016, with low meltwater input, cold temperatures, and high salinity. This suggests that such blooms may be restricted under warmer conditions. Through direct measurements and remote sensing data, a close link between large diatom blooms, ocean physical structures, and sea ice cover was found due to the El Nino effects. The study hypothesizes that continued atmospheric and oceanic warming trends leading to increased meltwater concentration will result in more episodic and spatially/temporally restricted diatom blooms.
