Non-regulated aromatic amines in clothing purchased in Spain and Brazil: Screening-level exposure and health impact assessment

Marilia Cristina Oliveira Souza et al.

Summary: The presence of a large number of chemicals in clothing and their harmful effects on human health and the environment have gained global attention. Azo dyes, widely used in the textile industry, are now considered emerging pollutants of great concern due to their potential health hazards. This study evaluated the levels of non-regulated aromatic amines (AAs) in clothing items from Spain and Brazil and assessed the potential impact on the health of vulnerable populations. The results showed the presence of AAs in clothes from both countries, with some concentrations exceeding safety thresholds, indicating possible risks to human health.

Treatment of textile wastewater containing mixed toxic azo dye and chromium (VI) BY haloalkaliphilic bacterial consortium

Leena Merlin Biju et al.

Summary: This study examined the removal of mixed azo dyes and Cr(VI) metal in synthetic textile wastewater using haloalkaliphilic bacterial strains in a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor. The results showed efficient decolorization of dyes and degradation of the metal, even at higher concentrations, by the eco-friendly bacterial consortium. Molecular and morphological characterization of the bacterial strains, along with analysis of metabolites, supported the findings of hazardous pollutant degradation and simultaneous dye decolorization.

Release of Heavy Metals from Plastic Statuettes Used as Souvenirs and/or Toys Handled by Children

Pietro Pandolfi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and potential health risks of plastic toys sold in the Italian market. Preliminary analysis reveals the presence of heavy metals in these products, with the release of dangerous elements such as chromium, copper, nickel, and lead. This issue should be taken seriously as these products, marketed as souvenirs, are actually toys handled by children.

Elemental measurements and health risk assessment of sub-Saharan African medicinal plants used for cardiovascular diseases? and related risk factors? treatment

Johnson Oluwaseun Odukoya et al.

Summary: This study assessed the mineral composition and human health risk of medicinal plant parts used for treating cardiovascular diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. While some elements in certain plant parts showed potential in preventing atherosclerosis, there were also unsafe levels of trace elements in certain medicinal plants. The habitual use of most studied medicinal plants presented an unacceptable risk of noncarcinogenic effects on health.

Detection of micro-toxic heavy metals in commercial ink powder brands via short-long orthogonal dual pulse LIPs and ICP-OES spectroscopic techniques for environmental protection

Ahmed A. I. Khalil et al.

Summary: The study successfully conducted a quantitative and qualitative analysis of micro-toxic elements in various brands of commercial ink powders (CIPs) available in Saudi Arabia using SLODP-LIPS and ICP-OES. The results showed good agreement between the outcomes from SLODP-LIPS and ICP-OES, indicating that SLODP-LIPS is a promising method for analyzing micro-toxic trace elements in solids.

Temporal variations of levels and sources of health risk associated with heavy metals in road dust in Beijing from May 2016 to April 2018

Cong Men et al.

Summary: The study found seasonal variations in heavy metals in road dust, with traffic exhaust being one of the main sources of heavy metals, and different sources having varying impacts on the carcinogenic risk for children. Combustion and the use of pesticides and fertilizers also pose potential risks to children's health.

On Iron Metabolism and Its Regulation

Anne-Cathrine S. Vogt et al.

Summary: Iron is crucial for biological processes and is mainly bound to hemoglobin in red blood cells. It is recycled from senescent cells by macrophages and regulated by hormones like hepcidin. Key proteins like DMT1 and FPN play crucial roles in iron uptake and transport.
