A critical review on microbial ecology in the novel biological nitrogen removal process: Dynamic balance of complex functional microbes for nitrogen removal

Hong Chen et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the microecology in the existing novel biological nitrogen removal process, including the growth characteristics and interactions of functional microorganisms, as well as the effects of different influencing factors on microbial communities evolution. It also explores the influence of quorum sensing (QS) systems on nitrogen removal microbes and proposes the need for further investigation into the mechanisms of action and composition of QS system circuits. Molecular analysis techniques and systems ecology theory are suggested for future exploration of microbial species and ecological niches to enhance the development of the novel biological nitrogen removal process.

Aerobic granular sludge treating hypersaline wastewater: Impact of pH on granulation and long-term operation at different organic loading rates

Xueying Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of pH on granulation and organic loading rate (OLR) of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) in hypersaline wastewater. The results showed that neutral pH was the most suitable for the development of salt-tolerant AGS, whereas acidic environment led to the formation of fluffy filamentous granules and alkaline environment weakened the granule stability. Satisfactory TOC removal could be achieved at a broad pH range from 5.0 to 9.0.

Rapid formation of aerobic granular sludge by bioaugmentation technology: A review

Xushen Han et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the main strategies for accelerating the formation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and focuses on the bioaugmentation technology. The bioaugmentation technology is divided into two categories: flocculating bacteria and filamentous fungus, which includes pure fungal pellets and pellet-bacteria system. The review also discusses the adsorption of various microorganisms by pure-culture fungal pellets in long-term operation. A comparison analysis of different bioaugmentation technologies for rapid AGS cultivation is provided, along with prospects for future research.

High nitrite-nitrogen stress intensity drives nitrite anaerobic oxidation to nitrate and inhibits methanogenesis

Jianfeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of nitrite-nitrogen stress on nitrite metabolism and methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion. The findings reveal that nitrite-nitrogen stress influences microbial diversity, composition, and functions, and microbial community assembly is primarily driven by stochastic processes.

Higher spreading risk of antibacterial biocide and heavy metal resistance genes than antibiotic resistance genes in aerobic granular sludge

Dingchang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a metagenomic approach was used to investigate the enrichment and mobility of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibacterial biocide & metal resistance genes (BMRGs) during aerobic granular sludge (AGS) formation. The results showed that the relative abundance of BMRGs was significantly higher than that of ARGs. AGS process was found to be more conducive to the enrichment of BMRGs, posing a greater risk of drug resistance. The study also identified specific microbial metabolisms and regulatory genes associated with the enrichment of ARGs and BMRGs.

Do increased organic loading rates accelerate aerobic granulation in hypersaline environment?

Rui Tang et al.

Summary: This study explored the granulation process of SAGS under different OLR conditions in hypersaline wastewater. Increasing OLR can accelerate the formation of AGS, but excessive OLR may lead to unstable granules.

Impact of light on anoxic/oxic reactors: performance, quorum sensing, and metagenomic characteristics

Xuening Fei et al.

Summary: The study showed that light significantly influenced nitrogen removal, EPS, and quorum sensing in anoxic/oxic reactors, with light promoting EPS production and affecting AHLs-mediated QS behaviors differently in reactors without light. Metagenomic analysis revealed that light reduced denitrification, stimulated biosynthesis pathways for polysaccharides and proteins, and down-regulated AHLs synthesis pathways, resulting in lower TN removal, more EPS production, and lower AHL concentrations.
