The rising impact of urbanization-caused CO2 emissions on terrestrial vegetation

Songxi Yang et al.

Summary: Vegetation photosynthesis is significantly affected by urbanization-caused CO2 concentrations. This study evaluated the cumulative effect of urbanization-caused CO2 concentrations from 2009 to 2018 and calculated their impact on global vegetation GPP, NPP, NEP, and SIF. The results showed that urbanization-caused CO2 concentrations accumulated by 3.93 ppm. South America, particularly the Amazon Rainforests, had the highest accumulation of GPP, NPP, NEP, and SIF, due to its tropical rainforest climate. Forests had the greatest impact on global vegetation GPP, NPP, NEP, and SIF accumulation.

Underestimated Interannual Variability of Terrestrial Vegetation Production by Terrestrial Ecosystem Models

Shangrong Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that current TEMs substantially underestimate the interannual variability (IAV) of GPP, especially in nonforest ecosystem types. One possible cause is that the models underestimate the changes of canopy physiology responding to climate change. The differences between the simulated and observed interannual variations of leaf area index (LAI) also contribute to the underestimation of IAV.

Reconstructing high-resolution in-situ vertical carbon dioxide profiles in the sparsely monitored Asian monsoon region

Barbel Vogel et al.

Summary: Human activities have significantly increased the concentrations of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. However, the sources of these gases in South Asia, which contribute to the global growth of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, are not well quantified. This study uses aircraft measurements and Lagrangian model simulations to reconstruct carbon dioxide profiles and understand the vertical structure of carbon dioxide in the Asian monsoon region. The findings suggest that the signals from surface to stratosphere can be used to evaluate transport models and assess carbon dioxide fluxes in South Asia.

Vegetation Greening, Extended Growing Seasons, and Temperature Feedbacks in Warming Temperate Grasslands of China

Summary: Changes in vegetation activity and phenology have significant impacts on climate, especially in temperate grasslands. The increasing vegetation activity and extended growing seasons in the temperate grasslands of China contribute to regional warming, highlighting the importance of considering these factors in climate models.

Mismatch of N release from the permafrost and vegetative uptake opens pathways of increasing nitrous oxide emissions in the high Arctic

Fabrice Lacroix et al.

Summary: Increased nutrient availability following permafrost thawing affects the biogeochemical cycling, greenhouse gas exchange, and nitrous oxide emissions in high Arctic ecosystems. However, there is a weak fertilization effect due to a mismatch between the timing of peak vegetative growth and peak thaw depth, resulting in incomplete plant use of nutrients near the permafrost table.

Grassland soil carbon sequestration: Current understanding, challenges, and solutions

Yongfei Bai et al.

Summary: Grasslands act as important soil carbon sinks, storing about one third of global terrestrial carbon stocks. Plant diversity increases soil organic carbon storage by enhancing carbon inputs and promoting microbial contributions. Improved grazing management and biodiversity restoration provide cost-effective solutions for climate change mitigation in grasslands.

Super-resolution reconstruction of GOSAT CO2 products using bicubic interpolation

Ru Xiang et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the GOSAT XCO2 data with super-resolution using bicubic interpolation, which improved its spatial resolution. The reconstructed data were validated using CO2 measurements from TCCON sites and OCO-2 data. The results showed that the reconstructed GOSAT data not only improved the spatial resolution, but also had little loss of accuracy.

Continued Warming of the Permafrost Regions Over the Northern Hemisphere Under Future Climate Change

Guojie Hu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the air temperature trends in the permafrost region of the Northern Hemisphere (PRONH) using CMIP6 models and observational data. The results show that there are variations in air temperature trends among different permafrost regions, and the greatest warming trends are observed in high-latitude permafrost regions under future scenarios.

Risk and vulnerability of Mongolian grasslands under climate change

Banzragch Nandintsetseg et al.

Summary: Climate change is projected to increase the aridity of semi-arid ecosystems, including Mongolian grasslands, leading to more frequent hazardous droughts. The increase in risk is mainly caused by the climate change-induced increase in the probability of hazardous drought and, to a lesser extent, by the increasing vulnerability. Strategic management for both adaptation and ecosystem conservation is needed in regions like northcentral and northeast Mongolia to cope with climate change impacts.

The speed, scale, and environmental and economic impacts of surface coal mining in the Mongolian Plateau

Qun Ma et al.

Summary: Surface coal mining in the Mongolian Plateau has caused severe environmental destruction and economic impacts, with over 90% of mining activities occurring in Inner Mongolia, China. The mining has led to significant damage to natural vegetation, agricultural land, and water resources, with long-lasting impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem processes, and ecosystem services.

Regional CO2 fluxes from 2010 to 2015 inferred from GOSAT XCO2 retrievals using a new version of the Global Carbon Assimilation System

Fei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study upgraded the GCAS system with new assimilation algorithms to assimilate GOSAT XCO2 retrievals, successfully constraining global terrestrial and ocean carbon fluxes and improving atmospheric CO2 concentration modeling. The posterior carbon fluxes were found to closely match observational values, providing effective estimates of atmospheric CO2 growth rate and its interannual changes.
