Investigation of mechanism of heavy metals (Cr6+, Pb2+ & Zn2+) adsorption from aqueous medium using rice husk ash: Kinetic and thermodynamic approach

A. K. Priya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential use of rice husk powder as a biosorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The experimental results showed that under optimized conditions, rice husk powder could effectively remove Cr, Pb, and Zn metal ions with high efficiency. The adsorption process followed the Temkin and D-R isotherm model and Elovich model for kinetic data. Based on the findings, rice husk powder could be considered as a low-cost and efficient adsorbent for heavy metal ion removal from industrial effluent.

Thermodynamics and Mechanism of the Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions on Keratin Biomasses for Wastewater Detoxification

Salaudeen Abdulwasiu Olawale et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analysis of the thermodynamics and mechanism of adsorption of cadmium, chromium, copper, and lead ions from aqueous solutions using two keratin-based biomaterials, human hair and sheep fur. The study explores the impact of various operating parameters on the removal of these heavy metal ions, such as initial ion concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, and biomaterial amount. The results show that pH and temperature have the highest influence on the adsorption of heavy metal ions. The maximum adsorption capacities of human hair and sheep fur for chromium ions are 1.33 and 1.40 mmol/g, respectively. A detailed thermodynamic analysis reveals an endothermic adsorption process for lead ions with adsorption enthalpies of 84.5 and 97.1 kJ/mol for human hair and sheep fur, respectively. Statistical physics calculations indicate a multi-interaction mechanism for the adsorption of this heavy metal ion, particularly for human hair. These keratinous biomaterials exhibit competitive adsorption capacities, especially for chromium ion removal, and outperform commercial activated carbons and other reported adsorbents.

Adsorptive scavenging of cationic dyes from aquatic phase by H3PO4 activated Indian jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) seeds based activated carbon: Isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic study

Tabrez Alam Khan et al.

Summary: In this study, a cost-effective Indian jujube seeds derived activated carbon (IJSAC) was used for the removal of acriflavine (AF) and Victoria blue B (VB) from the aquatic environment. The IJSAC showed a high surface area and mesoporous structure, making it suitable for dye adsorption. The optimal conditions for adsorption were determined and the adsorption process was analyzed kinetically and thermodynamically. The results demonstrated that IJSAC is an efficient adsorbent for the removal of cationic dyes.

Research Progress on Heavy Metals Pollution in the Soil of Smelting Sites in China

Muhammad Adnan et al.

Summary: Contamination by heavy metals in China has significant impacts on soil quality, food security, and human health. Mining and smelting activities release massive amounts of heavy metals into the environment, causing severe contamination and hazards to plants, soil organisms, and humans. Pb toxicity is particularly harmful to children. Novel approaches for controlling and reducing heavy metal pollution, such as hydrometallurgy and phytoremediation, offer potential solutions. However, environmentally friendly remediation of contaminated sites remains a challenge.

Thermodynamic, isothermal and kinetic studies of heavy metals adsorption by chemically modified Tanzanian Malangali kaolin clay

N. M. Malima et al.

Summary: This study focused on the modification of native Malangali kaolinite using HCl acid to improve its physicochemical properties, and examined the adsorption behavior of cadmium and cobalt ions on the modified kaolin. The results showed that the modified kaolinite exhibited increased pore diameter, pore volume, and surface area, making it an efficient adsorbent for heavy metals in polluted wastewater. The findings also revealed that the adsorption process was exothermic, spontaneous and involved monolayer adsorption on homogeneous active sites of the adsorbent.
