Revealing impacts of operational modes on anaerobic digestion systems coupling with sulfate reduction

Jin Du et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of operational parameters on microbial communities in anaerobic digestion (AD) with sulfate. It finds that reactors in rapid-filling mode exhibit fast kinetic properties, while reactors in slow-filling mode can mitigate propionate accumulation. Taxonomic and functional analysis further support the suitability of rapid- and slow-filling modes for the growth of r-strategists (such as Desulfomicrobium) and K-strategists (such as Geobacter), respectively.

The r/K selection theory and its application in biological wastewater treatment processes

Qidong Yin et al.

Summary: Understanding the characteristics of functional organisms is crucial for wastewater treatment. This review systematically characterized two types of strategists in wastewater treatment ecosystems and provided novel strategies for selectively enriching microbial community. The selection of r-/K-strategists depends on factors such as food-to-microorganism ratio, mass transfer, cell size, and biomass morphology. Practical applications include the concept of substrate flux for selective enrichment of r-/K-strategists.

A new integrated single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell-Anaerobic membrane bioreactor system for improving methane production and membrane fouling mitigation

Yuankun Hao et al.

Summary: A novel integrated system combining an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) and a single-chamber air cathode microbial fuel cell (ScMFC) was designed to enhance methane production and reduce membrane fouling. The system delivered a stable micro-bioelectric field environment with a high voltage output. Compared to the conventional AnMBR, this system increased methane production and reduced soluble microbial product and extracellular polymeric substances concentrations. In addition, the trans membrane pressure also remained in a slow growth status, prolonging the system's operation cycle.

Distinguishing responses of acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens to ammonia stress in mesophilic mixed cultures

Zhongzhong Wang et al.

Summary: The shift from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic pathway in methanogenesis under ammonia inhibition is a common phenomenon. This study investigated the ammonia tolerance and recovery of acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens in anaerobic digestion. The results showed that hydrogenotrophic methanogens had higher tolerance to ammonia than acetoclastic methanogens, but were more adversely affected by NH4+ at pH≤8.0.

Solids Retention Times Shift Methanogenic Ethanol Oxidation: Novel Insights into Metabolic Pathways, Microbial Community Dynamics, and Energy Metabolisms

Lizhen Xing et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of different solids retention times (SRTs) on the anaerobic ecosystem in reactors using ethanol as the substrate. The results showed that microbial metabolic pathways, population dynamics, and energy metabolism were influenced by varying SRTs, ultimately impacting methane production efficiency.
