Nexus of heat-vulnerable chronic diseases and heatwave mediated through tri-environmental interactions: A nationwide fine-grained study in Australia

Siqin Wang et al.

Summary: Our study extends the Social Ecological Theory by constructing a tri-environmental conceptual framework, and contributes to the first nationwide study of the relationship between heat-vulnerable chronic diseases and heatwaves in Australia. We utilize the random forest regression model to explore the importance of heatwaves and tri-environmental variables that contribute to the prevalence of six types of diseases. The overall effect of heatwaves on diseases varies across disease types and geographical contexts, while tri-environmental variables have a relatively larger impact.

How can the floor area types of a university campus mitigate the increase of urban air temperature?

Stefano Ponti et al.

Summary: The urban heat island (UHI) has a significant impact on urban residents' lives under climate change. Green areas mitigate the UHI and modify anthropized surfaces with specific characteristics. This study uses a university campus as a template to analyze the mitigation effect of different surface types on air temperature warming and provides best practices for future land surface management in urban areas.

Impacts of urban densification and vertical growth on urban heat environment: A case study in the 4th Ring Road Area, Zhengzhou, China

Xuanchi Chen et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanisation has significant impacts on the surface morphology, local regional climate, and thermal environment in urban areas. Here we analyse both the impacts of horizontal sprawl and vertical changes on the urban thermal environment and develop a method to understand the relationship between urban morphology and urban heat.

Do industrial parks generate intra-heat island effects in cities? New evidence, quantitative methods, and contributing factors from a spatiotemporal analysis of top steel plants in China

Qingyan Meng et al.

Summary: Industrial parks contribute to urban heat island effect by emitting anthropogenic heat, but the specific industrial heat island (IHI) effect needs more research and new quantitative methods. This study proposed a new scheme to quantify and define IHI effect at a finer scale, analyzing its spatiotemporal variation based on different natural and urban references. The intensity of IHI effect was found to be positively associated with anthropogenic heat, with more significant disparities observed between industrial parks and their surroundings during warm seasons.

A functional seasonal thermal hot-spot classification: Focus on industrial sites

Giulia Guerri et al.

Summary: This study focused on the metropolitan area of Florence in Tuscany, Italy, providing a functional spatial thermal anomaly indicator obtained through thermal hot-spot detection. The analysis revealed summer hot- and cool-spots, as well as winter warm- and cold-spots, combined into a comprehensive Thermal Hot-Spot spatial indicator. The classification in industrial areas offers valuable information for thermal mitigation strategies to reduce heat-related health risks for workers.

Mapping Blue and Red Color-Coated Steel Sheet Roof Buildings over China Using Sentinel-2A/B MSIL2A Images

Alim Samat et al.

Summary: This study presents six novel spectral indexes for accurate identification of color-coated steel sheet (CCSS) materials in urban areas using Earth observation technologies and cloud computing. The results demonstrate a higher proportion of blue and red CCSS materials in northern urban areas, which are positively correlated with population and urban size.

Urban growth and its impact on land surface temperature in an industrial city in Aceh, Indonesia

Ashfa Achmad et al.

Summary: This article explores the patterns of land use and land cover changes as well as land surface temperature changes in Lhokseumawe, an industrial city in Indonesia. The study finds a significant increase in the built-up area and recommends considering land surface temperature variables in urban planning to mitigate the urban heat island effect.

Association between high temperature and heatwaves with heat-related illnesses: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Clare Faurie et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the effects of extreme heat on heat-related illness. The results showed that for every 1-degree Celsius increase in temperature, the morbidity and mortality of heat-related illnesses increased by 18% and 35% respectively. Direct heat illness had the greatest increase, and individuals aged over 65 and those living in subtropical climates were more vulnerable to the risks.

Jet sweeping angle control by fluidic oscillators with master-slave designs

Ziyan Li et al.

Summary: The newly designed fluidic oscillators in this study successfully decoupled the inherent correlation between spreading angle and jet volume flow rate of traditional fluidic oscillators by implementing a master-slave design. Design A and Design B, utilizing short diverging exit and long interaction chamber respectively, enhanced flow instability and control authority of the master layer. Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study the jet spreading angles and oscillation properties of these two designs.

Transformation effect of resource-based cities based on PSM-DID model: An empirical analysis from China

Fei Fan et al.

Summary: The implementation of the National Plan for Resource-based City Sustainable Development has promoted economic, social, and ecological transformation, but did not have additional effects on sustainable resource utilization. Market development is the driving factor that affects all forms of transformation the most, and the impact of this transformation varies by stages of urban development according to the full life cycle of the resource-based city and its local resources.

Expansion of Industrial Parks in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration: A Spatial Analysis

Lei Kang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that major industrial parks in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region have continuously expanded during the three periods, but with diminishing average annual growth rates. The density of industrial parks has always been high in Beijing and Tianjin, while it increased in Hebei over the three periods, with more parks established in the southeastern regions and fewer in the northern regions. Expansion modes varied throughout the periods, with edge- and infilling expansions in core cities dominating in certain periods, and edge-expansions in small and medium-sized cities in others. Identifying these modes is crucial for optimizing spatial planning for industrial parks in the entire region.
