Determination of Water-Soluble Trace Elements in the PM10 and PM2.5 of Palermo Town (Italy)

Daniela Varrica et al.

Summary: This study investigates the solubility of trace elements in the atmospheric particulate matter in the urban area of Palermo. Samples of PM10 and PM2.5 were collected and analyzed using ICP-MS to determine the composition. The results show significant differences in metal content between urban and suburban samples. The leaching test reveals that metals produced by human activities have higher solubility in water and mobility compared to those of natural origin. Factor analysis identifies anthropogenic, geogenic, and sea spray as the main sources of water-soluble ions.

Environmental Toxicants and the Developing Brain

Amanda C. Wylie et al.

Summary: Early life is a critical period for brain development and vulnerable to environmental insults. Exposure to toxicants like PM2.5, manganese, and phthalates has been linked to altered developmental and mental health outcomes. However, there is limited research on the neurodevelopmental effects of these toxicants in infant and pediatric populations. This review provides an overview of these toxicants, summarizes evidence from animal models, examines their associations with developmental and psychiatric outcomes, and discusses the need for future research using neuroimaging measures.

Uncovering the link between air pollution and neurodevelopmental alterations during pregnancy and early life exposure: A systematic review

Diego Ruiz-Sobremazas et al.

Summary: Air pollution has a significant impact on human health and the economy, and there has been an increase in neurodevelopmental disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in recent years. Studies have found a connection between prenatal or perinatal exposure to environmental pollutants and ASD. This systematic review analyzes current literature on the relationship between exposure to air pollutants and neurodevelopmental disorders in rodents, highlighting negative developmental outcomes related to ASD-like behaviors. However, more research is needed to establish a clear relationship in certain domains.

The concentration of particulate matter in the barn air and its influence on the content of heavy metals in milk

Zenon Nieckarz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of particulate pollution in the atmospheric air on the concentration of particulate matter in a dairy cattle barn and on the content of selected heavy metals in milk. The measurements showed a high correlation between the concentrations of particulates measured outside and inside the barn, suggesting a significant impact of the atmospheric air on the particulate pollution level. The analysis of milk collected under high particulate pollution revealed an exceedance of the permitted lead level.

Linking of NMDA receptors and mGluR5 in the nucleus accumbens core to repeated cocaine-induced 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalization in rats

Sumin Sohn et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the involvement of glutamate receptors in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in the vocal expression of 50-kHz ultrasonic calls after repeated cocaine administration in rats. Activation of NMDA receptors and mGluR5 in the NAc core is linked to a positive emotional state in rats after repeated exposure to cocaine.

Extended air pollution index (API) as tool of sustainable indicator in the air quality assessment: El-Nino events with climate change driven

C. M. Payus et al.

Summary: The main purpose of this research is to improve and optimize risk characterization and conjunctive air quality assessment by detecting air quality changes in a shorter period of time and space. By using the Air Pollution Index (API) as a single score to classify air quality in a simplified and realistic way, this research can help improve existing methodologies and provide an alternative approach for analyzing air quality changes.

Influence of Gestational Chlorpyrifos Exposure on ASD-like Behaviors in an fmr1-KO Rat Model

Cristian Perez-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Based on previous reports, exposure to pesticides, specifically chlorpyrifos, during pregnancy can increase the severity of ASD-like behaviors in genetically vulnerable individuals. This study used fmr1 knockout rats to investigate the additive effect of gestational chlorpyrifos exposure on the ASD-like phenotype. The results showed that gestational exposure to low doses of chlorpyrifos exacerbated social deficits and altered gene expression in the hippocampus of the fmr1 knockout rats.

Extracellular Dopamine Levels in Nucleus Accumbens after Chronic Stress in Rats with Persistently High vs. Low 50-kHz Ultrasonic Vocalization Response

Kadri Koiv et al.

Summary: The study found that ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rats in response to an imitation of rough-and-tumble play ('tickling') are associated with positive affective states and rewarding experiences. The results suggest that dopamine (DA) levels in the NAc shell are differentially regulated in response to stress in animals with high and low positive affect, indicating a potential link between affectivity and dopaminergic neurotransmission.
